The importance of IPL....

International 12th Man
If test cricket thrives (& I think it will) - it will be mainly because cricket players - like most other people seek to strive a balance between the need to achieve comfort (money, fame, not working your butt off) and the need to have importance (as long as their peers and the cognoscenti acknowledge test cricket to be the ultimate). And the most successful people in any profession usually attain both, and certainly want to.

That's why an individual perceived as shallow like Yuvraj - who has more than his share of money and the good life in limited overs cricket - is willing to risk making a fool of himself and show up in whites.

IPL actually simplifies this balancing act, by taking care of the former set of needs in a six week period. The "casualty' is likely to be less important ODI tournaments and, frankly, tests against weaker sides. Why should SRT bother to show up vs BD in a test match - other than for match practice - if his achievements against them are going to be always discounted? (See this board as an example where it is standard procedure to filter stats in exactly this manner).

Serving BCCI (or WICB) by sailing on to yet another ODI series is not equal to serving India.
Right. India did not win the World Cup, BCCI did. Bindra won an Olympic Gold medal for IOA, not India.

For instance, real national duties would've been in playing in the Asian games. BD, Pakistan, SL sent third stringers, India sent none (as they couldn't send the first choice team).
That would not be playing for India; that would be playing for the IOA or AGF.
Oh! Wait. Who selects the team? BCCI? Then that too would be playing for BCCI.

Right, we get it. No one can ever play any sport for India. Next.

Yup. They did something like that though I don't recall the precise words.

Bun, just as a matter of interest, how much did you get paid for making all these posts here?

Or, horror, did you derive some satisfaction other than a monetary one from doing it?

nope, it will be much much lower. national representation is a goal, but all things being equal, aif presented with these two choices which are mutually exclusive, pretty sure theyd choose which rewards them better.

I cant understand why nationalism should bind players alone, when it is not applicable to people in other sectors. makes no sense.
For ****'s sake, how many ****s have to tell you you're using the word nationalism wrong before you stop throwing it about? Your posts including it don't make any ****ing sense

Although I am not really in favor of promoting in house competition, I am willing to give it a second thought for the referral bonus. Shoot me ur resume.

I don't have the foggiest idea of what you are talking about.

Whatever it takes!!!
How? That India can't be bothered sending reasonably full strength squads on tours because the players need a rest? - A rest that is taken up by the IPL.
why are we assuming that the players will get a rest if IPL weren't here? Trust me, if there was no IPL, there would be a stupid ODI series in its place.. BCCI are not going to let a window open up where they can't schedule some sort of series...
