The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

I really think Arthur Morris is pretty underrated. 6 tons his first two ashes series when Bradman only got 4. 3 in each compared to Bradmans 2

If man of the series was an award back then, you'd have to say he was the only player in any series Bradman played in where he was twice more deserving than the Don of being awarded it.

You can tell why the Don thought very highly of him

Yes he fell away after those first two series but 12 tons from 46 tests @ avg 46 is very solid for an opener

But he was batting him 6 so you'd think he was considering his batting heavily
A lot of Tallon's best years as a batsman were in first class cricket before the war when he was overlooked by the selectors. Way better batsman by all accounts than his test average indicates.

Still seems a bit light on batting talent for your ATG XI 6, especially with Lindwall at 7. I don't know why he went with five specialist bowlers plus Sobers lol. It is an odd team, seems more like an ODI side

Backing himself to make a triple and not need much batting.

Was a strange bloke tstl by all reports.

Didn’t he actually not make that XI himself? I think someone here was saying something like his biographer actually made it.

Some slight underrating of Bedser going on here. He was basically a one man band for the Poms in '48.

And yet he still averaged under 30 even in first class cricket. Better than his Test record, yes, but still extremely modest for an All Time XI 6.

Oh come on, in Morris' debut Ashes in 1946/47, he made 503 runs @ 71.85 with four 50+ scores, while Bradman made 680 runs @ 97.14 with five 50+ scores. Bit of a stretch to say he was twice more deserving than the Don of being awarded Man of the Series.

Tons really must be the worst singular stand alone measure pf performances. It is hard to constue a more arbitarary measure than a round number, whether in terms of personal performance or impact on result.

Plenty of people think (with reasonable suspicion) that Roland Perry more or less just made it up.

Bradman never officially put his name to that XI during his lifetime. It was announced by Roland Perry after Bradman's death as a tool to sell his new book. It could well have been Perry's best guess as to what Bradman's All Time XI might have been. If it had really been selected by Bradman himself, why the need for the secrecy in the years between the (alleged) selection of the XI and Bradman's death?

Around 30 is good for a non Gilchrist opener though, it's about the same as what Knott averaged. The position (number 6) is a bit questionable yeah but then again the whole xi is.

True, however, the vast majority of tons aren't round numbers. Or atleast not particularly more round than < 100 scores.

The answer to who has held a test match record for 'most xxxs' for the longest?

Nice cricket trivia question.
52 stumpings in just 54 matches, I know he kept to a lot of spinners but jeez he must’ve been pretty amazing. Would’ve loved to have watched him.
