Most of the stats point to Matthew Hayden but still an interesting topic to discuss I think.

It will help to include players in the comparison in the title thread. Otherwise all threads on the forum page start looking same.

Taylor for me. Yes Hayden has better stats but Taylor was a top notch captain and played the game in the right way.

Finally, Hayden was a **** and Taylor has always seemed like a top bloke

Given his fantastic start to test cricket, I've always thought Mark Taylor was quite disappointing after that, so Hayden relatively easily.
Not only that but Hayden was a much better player to watch, as their strike rates suggest, Taylor 41, Hayden 60 which is a huge difference.

I don't disagree that Hayden's personality... wasn't the best... but the amount of disrespect he gets as an opening batsman who scored, what, 30 Test centuries is mad.
Batsmen who scored tons more often than Hayden (min 20 matches): Bradman, Headley, Walcott, Labuschagne, Sutcliffe, Weekes, Smith, Pollock, Sangakkara

If you're referring to Taylor's debut year in Test cricket - 1989, where he scored 1219 runs......yes it was a good start.

For you to say he was disappointing after his great start is harsh. He was far from disappointing, in fact he was the 3rd highest run scorer in the 1990s, see link below:

Good effort for an opening batsman who faced some of the all time great fast bowlers - Akram, Younis, Ambrose, Walsh, Donald, Pollock, as well as the very good Chaminda Vaas, plus good fast bowlers in Andy Caddick, Darren Gough and Chris Cairns - and that was the fast bowlers only - he also had to face quality spinners in Murali, Anil Kumble, Saqlain Mushtaq, Mushtaq Ahmed and Daniel Vettori.

Perhaps I am being a wee bit harsh on tubby Taylor who certainly did have his moments in the sun.
My reference of disappointment to him though was a general one and referred to over many years.
The table for the most runs that decade is somewhat misleading because he played more tests than anyone else, and while he certainly faced some
great bowlers during that time, he only averaged 40 that decade despite scoring 334* which is fine, but certainly nothing outstanding.

They average similar but Slater has a clear edge on consistency. Taylor a little feast or famine in terms of run distribution per year.

And I’d go Hayden>Slater>Langer>Taylor>Warner.
