I would pick:

1. Strauss - can bat for a day with no trouble.
2. Langer - in great form.
3. Kirsten - can bat forever easily.
4. Vaughan - we all know how good he is when in form.
5. Thorpe - can bat for ages.
6. Atherton - great player bats for ages, boring.
7. Kallis - stays in and gets runs - used as a bowler too.
8. Boucher - best keeper/batsman that can block out/defend.
9. Warne - can bat well for a bowler.
10. Gillespie - can bat ok for a bowler.
11. Hoggard - worked hard on blocking out - another bowler

4 bowlers a keeper and 7 batsmen, best team balance you can get with a few part time bowlers

Because it's a match situation... and because I stated it in my initial post.
even so, imo, the best team whether it is to bat for 2, 3 or 5 days would need to have the best players(they can bat fast or slow and they can go on and on....), not necessarily good defensive minded players...

a good team from players i have watched would be:

gavaskar
gooch
dravid
kallis
lara
tendulkar
healy
imran
pollock
warne
gillespie

I was hesitant to slip Strauss in there because, he is determined and can stay at the crease for a while, but the way he's gotten out lately has been a bit of a concern. He does seem to lose concentration for small periods and in those periods is succeptible to dismissal.

So Gillespie's bowling against himself? :p

I'd take him batting 78 overs for 130-140 any day, then making the odd really big score and then being inconsistent between those.

With such a strong batting line-up, the team is assured to bat 2 days if Strauss can see out 2 sessions & a half.

i wouldnt drop hussain, the man is custom made to bat for his life. id drop chanderpaul quite comfortably, although not for kallis, but for one of the players ive mentioned in my earlier post.

Not bad, but I think David Boon has to make it, and Ganguly could get a run as well.
