Shane Watson, you're a star

Whatever it takes!!!
He is an awesome talent but I hope he gets his role now.

He is a batsman, his batting is too good to be wasted. He should not look at himself as a Flintoff or some other bowling all rounder. He is a batsman who can bowl and that is how he should be treated, by himself and by his captains.

Get him to bat up the order, utilize his talent and technique and get the most runs out of him. And juz have him bowl when all other options have failed or to give your main bowlers a breather. Don't bowl him into the dust and get him injured again and waste an amazing batting talent.

Why? Symonds at 4 has been a powerhouse for years; why on Earth would you want to mess with that?
Symonds has always been at 5, hasn't he? The number 4 slot was passed from Martyn to Clarke to Hussey IIRC.

Personally think Symonds at 5 and Hussey at 7 will see them as the finishers more often than not - and that's a specialised role requiring experience if ever I saw one. There's enough firepower as is in the top order.

The player's wishes also have to be taken into account. Hussey made it clear when he was at 7 that he wasn't particularly enamored with batting so low and not being given the opportunity to build an innings. A quick-fire finishing 30-50 runs is batting junk food to blokes like Hussey. Considering how well he's done since moving up, moving him back down is a backward step in my mind. Batting up top is still seen as something you have to earn and Watto hasn't yet.

He wasn't bowling much when he was injured in the first place. Christ, don't bowl him at all!

BTW Top Cat, a quick look at Symonds ODI stats and he's played 17 times at 4 and averaged 35.92, Batting at 5 he's done that 90 times and averages 45. His strike rate is 7 higher also at 5.

This is why I want Watson at 4, Symonds at 5.

Regarding Hussey and Haddin, yes Hussey could go 6,that's why I put in the intial post that it could be the other way around.

Yeah Symonds has rarely played at 4 in comparison to 5. Martyn and now Clarke have had the no.4 spot tied down.

Agreed. His bowling figures in this tournament flatter him a bit because he faced a lot of batsmen who were very poor against the short-stuff. But his batting was terrific.

What? Martyn used to play at number four. Now Clarke does. Not hard.

As has been said, Symonds bats at number five. And why wouldn't Marsh get a go opening the batting? He was picked in the squad. There's a vacancy for the position with no other really suitable candiates. Would be silly not to pick him IMO. Quite a lot of uneducated posts cropping up.

Hayden
Marsh
Ponting
Clarke
Symonds
Hussey
Haddin

should be the order, no question. IMO, Clarke to open the batting with Watson slotting in at four when Hayden departs, but a lot can happen in that time.

Get the feeling that Jakester thought that you had meant that Martyn is still in the race for that spot.... :)

Has Clarke opened for NSW for an extended period of time? I know he's had the odd crack at ODI level, with limited success, but I'd far prefer to see him at #4 with Watson opening.

Also, with regards to Marsh, he had a superb IPL and should definitely be in contention for an openers spot, but is he ready for ODI cricket? I'm not sure how he went in the FR Cup last season, but maybe his chance will come when Hayden retires and he's got a few more runs under his belt.

Hussey back to 7 below Haddin? And Watto above Symonds? Surely you jest. Both of those two are still above Watto in the pecking order for middle-order spots and are amongst Australia's best-performed ODI players.

I would suggest the opening spot would be a tussle between Watto and Hopes with Marsh brought in to experiment later in the series if needed. No way will Marsh get a start, as well as he played in India.
Who do you suggest will open at the start of the series if Marsh dosent....

Given that Haydens out and Clarke hasnt been too good opening in ODI's lately (altthough he did it very well early in his career)...

It's almost certain that Marsh and Hopes will be the openers, unless Australia want to give Michael Clarke another go and to also add some experience at the top of the order. However, I had thought they had given up on Clarke opening as it hasn't come off and he hasn't looked suited to the role.
