Cricketer Of The Year
Are young WI athletes really taking up North American sports and if so what are the sports providing competition to cricket? I've heard basketball but I don't know if there are many West Indians who take up the game. Maybe they're taking up scholarships and other opportunities in soccer and athletics in America.
Could be the biggest competitor to tests in the WI is the shorter form of the game itself. While you can understand why players chase the dollar, they do so in other countries and sports as well. There doesn't seem to be a counter to balance out that attraction. Nobody would really want to commit to a national team that is losing but why don't they want to at least dedicate time to improve it? Could be the concept of the WI just isn't appealing to WI youngsters. The islands have always had to maintain an overriding unity amongst people from several different nations and maybe that isn't so strong anymore. A defined national identity isn't a problem any other cricket team has to worry about.
Its true the WI did compete in the just finished tests but that was almost always when bowling. The pitches have to improve. Trust your bowling on all surfaces as there is even slow bowling depth in the WI. But you have to give the batsmen some hope in developing. Better pitches just seems to be the most obvious thing to do and more likely to bring results than trying to shake down the ICC for more cash.
