You include the top 3 numbers, and then you still need to account for the boost of playing majority 5/6 and the era.

This is silly man. Even after batting majority easier position in the flattest era ever, there's only a 3 point average difference between them. It's obvious they are the same level.

Top 3 numbers cancels out the batting position boost, era is fair.

Again with the batting position! No, accounting for his top 3 percentage of innings, batting position is done. If you want to argue position, then remove his top 3 career. There's also a significant longevity advantage.

No he was a great clutch player. As was someone like Steve Waugh. But then realistically over the course of a career it does offer an easier launching pad to come at 5/6.

Not sure if anyone is arguing Laxman > S. Waugh

You can't remove opening numbers, and top 3 being only half of his time at 5/6 doesn't cancel it out, there is still a net advantage for batting late in the order.

Notice how you simultaneously want to have his opening numbers not counted to make his overall average better, but also counted to cancel out his late order batting advantage.

Not spin IMO. Ponting has a major issue with Harbi but overall I dont think Dravid is superior.

Saying Ponting is better than Dravid against spin is like saying Sehwag is better than Dravid against swing

Indians are clearly better. There is very little in it on a test by test basis though. In a one off test, it's almost a coin flip as to which unit performs better, although the Indians would outperform a bit more often.

The extra longevity puts them a distance ahead though. The average team is going to benefit a lot from fielding a quality bat in place of their worst one for x extra years.

There aren't many batsmen with more centuries against atg fast bowlers as Mark Waugh. I think its fairly close despite the 3 or 4 run difference in average which is probably down to the era difference

We may never know but I'll bet my house that Mark would have averaged 47-48 if his career overlapped the majority of the 00s
