I'm pretty sure it was just pure spite. I think his team was out of the running but he really hated the team he wanted out, so he played properly 95% of the game and then openly tanked it with a few runs to win.

We infamously did a similar thing to Guildford leagues in the Parra A grade comp many many years ago. Didn’t go over too well

You’ve gotta love that Pakistan replaced as skipper a bloke suspended for a racial slur with a bloke they’d previously banned for throwing a match.
