Of all these blokes I think de Villiers is the hardest to rate because he downhill skied for the first part of his career but in the second he kind of went to a ridiculous level and played some amazing knocks in different conditions and varying circumstances

I'd think the openers have more "value" out of this list, even though they obviously have a little less run scoring. De Villiers wasn't any better as a specialist than as a WK batsman, so I'm going to disregard any "extra credit" I might give for that capability. So seeing as openers vs middle order is a bit unfair of a comparison I'd split them and place them in this order:

Openers:

1) Graeme Smith
2) Alastair Cook

Middle Order:

1) Michael Clarke
2) Kevin Pietersen
3) AB de Villiers
4) Hashim Amla

With smaller gaps between the middle order players, and a bigger gap between the openers Smith and Cook.
