Difference being that Astle and especially Styris actually look threatening when they bowl.

Collingwood is the "partnership breaker" who doesn't take wickets.
Has he really been the given the chance though? He hasn't had that many overs in Test cricket to date, and his ODI and First Class bowling averages aren't too bad.

Eyes not spreadsheets
His OD bowling is OK, but I'd hardly call 100 wickets @ 40.21 in FC anything to write home about.

From left-field, I reckon if young Broad shows some form in the ODIs v Pakistan (or whoever! :p) he might just be a chance for that difficult-to-fill no.8 slot. Looks to have a rock-solid temperament & has hopefully inherited some of his old man's batting genes too.
Considering Broad is apparently still being stuck doggedly to the "U18 rules" of seven over spells and no more in County cricket, picking him for the Ashes just looks like a non-starter.

The England selectors just won't be forgiven if his career is ended in his mid-twenties with back problems.

I'll have a bash at the England 16 as that's what messers Atherton, Knight, Lehmann & Holding are doing on Sky. This is who I think will be picked, rather than who I would pick.

Flintoff *
Strauss
Trescothick
Cook
Pietersen
Collingwood
Bell
Read+
G Jones+
Giles
Panesar
Hoggard
Harmison
Anderson
Plunkett
Mahmood

I'd personally do for Strauss as captain, but it seems to matter more to Fred & as he's very likely to be out key man I don';t think the brains trust will want to run the risk of upsetting him. I still think we'll go for 5 specialist batters + Fred in our XI, so taking 7 specialist batters seems one too many. Anderson & Plunkett are obviously still in the selectors' thinking, hence them being hawked to other counties for practice; Mahmood is the man in possession. The spinners (assuming Gilo's progress is as encouraging as the noises being made would suggest) choose themselves.

Yea saw that don't totally agree with them, but for me even thought its irrelevant to the final outcome this would by 16:

1. Strauss*
2. Read
3. Foster
4. Trescothick
5. Flintoff
6. Cook
7. Pietersen
8. Bell
9. Collingwood
10. Dalrymple
11. Panesar
12. Harmison
13. Hoggard
14. Anderson
15. Mahmood
16. Broad

Their is suppose to be 8 back-up players to the squad so i guess that could be Joyce, Plunkett, Giles, G Jones, Tremlett, Lewis, Bopora, Shah.

Looking at the squad i want Strauss as captain, let Freddie be Freddie i say..

On the back-up keeper, i'm not convinced about Jones since he hasn't gone back to Kent & hasn't shown any real form but James Foster as & i'd have him as back-up.

With the bowling i agree with the idea of not picking two left-arm spinners since it makes the attack look fairly one-dimensional, so i'll go Dalrymple since he does turn it a fair bit & can bat very well. The fast bowlers are fairly obvious AFAIC the only debate for me is Broad/Plunkett.

My Australian Line-up would be

1.Hayden
2.Langer
3.Ponting
4.Clarke
5.Hussey
6.Watson
7.Gilchrist
8.Waren
9.Lee
10.Clark
11.McGrath

If Gillespie is selected ahead of Stuart Clark on the back of 8 wickets in 2 matches against Bangladesh the selectors really need their heads read!!!! Clark's performance in South Africa was outstanding, and that alone should hold him in good steed.

As much as i would like to See Jaques in the team Ahead of Langer, it's most likely Langers Last Series, and he's done nothing wrong (apart from being cracked on the noggin) to justify dropping Him.

Clarke has to be in the team, he is a brilliant Batsmen, and deserves a recall after some brilliant ODI & Pura Cup form. Whilst Martyn scored a century against SA in Jo'burg, he's 35... and definetly not going to get any better as Clarke Will.

Watson at 6 then provides the 5th bowling option, and his bowling has improved outtasite since his last test match, and after his inspired performances for Aust. A and Queensland he deserves another shot.

In the ashes the idea is not to pick the side with the future in mind, its to pick the side that will win you the ashes. Clarke if he is to play surely should not be at #4 he isn't good enough to bat their at least right now (but hopefully down the line he could be) it will be at #6, is a battle with him & Watson since Ponting said the other day that who plays their will depend on McGrath's form.

The fact that Martyn was recalled means that at least he will start the series & based on form guys like Hodge, Jaques would have a shout at replacing him.

Yeah, i've no doubts Martyn will start the series, but i'd imagine he won't be given much slack!! Perhaps if Marto fail Hussey could move up to 4, Clarke 5, Watto 6.

As brilliant as Jaques has been lately, i think they've pencilled him down as an opener, and aren't likely to budge from that with an opening spot most likely to come up for grabs after the ashes if Langer does indeed retire. Putting Jaques at 4 would be great, but i wouldn't hold my breath about them doing it.
