How is actually quite a handy off break bowler, and has done well for CD performing that job. If he develops that side of his game, he could prove a valuable option for the World Cup where the wickets will be slower, and also for games in the sub continent.
Three wickets in 47 matches for an average of 67, and an economy rate of exactly 6. Clearly not good enough to be 6th bowler IMO.

You gotta like the look of Jamie How. Definate shades of Martin Crowe. Extremely quick on the hook/pull stroke coupled with some brilliant ondrives off the front foot.

Fulton was equally as impressive in a different kind of way. Strong shots straight down the ground, not quite as good a backfoot player as How, but hits the ball harder.

The pair made it look pretty easy, despite a few typical akward moments against Murali. I definately think they looked more solid than Astle or Mcmillian have in the last 6 months.

If anyone wants to see the boundries and highlights of the game (and the chappell/Hadlee series for that matter) you should go to ........ blackcaps.co.nz and join the 431 club which is free and offers video coverage.

How was very impressive, yes. I must admit I was a bit skeptical about his selection looking at his State Shield stats compared to his First Class ones, but he certainly changed my mind. Fantastic debut innings.

He has contributed well in 2 of his 4 games since his comeback so why would we want to do that?
I was looking at the bowling side of things - going at over 6 an over in 3 of those 4 games.

Doesnt work for me. I log in and interactive video highlights doesnt work it shows a sample innings and doesnt show any games who knows why not if it works for everybody else.

But do we really need a specialist batsman as the super sub? Like the situation yesterday, Astle was a clog to the innings because we already possessed enough batsmen down the order. I would rather have an attacking batsman like Adams to strengthen our lower order.
NZ can be quite inconsistent at times, if they are chasing and lose a few cheap wickets (which happens twice a season at least) they need a supersub who can come in and steady the ship as well as bowl and I feel that in the meantime Astle is the best option Bracewell has, but with a bit of work on his batting Franklin could move into that role by the world cup.
Also, Astle needs time to settle in and more importantly is out of form, I admire the way he went about his innings on Saturday, trying to play himself into form rather than throw the bat at the ball.

Styris bowling 10 isnt the main problem. The main problem is that Jamie How is the 6th bowler. Had Astle or McMillan still been in the side, it would be perfectly feasable to use this plan, but How as the 6th bowler is disasterous IMO.
Well, if Cairns is the supersub and one of our 5 bowlers is getting pasted we can always sub Cairns on for a batsman.

Cricket is not all about stats, How is a handy bowler, but like I said, he needs to develop that side of his game more and if he can he will be a valuable option. I don't think Bracewell will ever go into a match with Styris as the 5th bowler.

I could definately see Bracewell going into a game with Styris as 5th bowler. He is definately good enough IMO. There needs to be an adequate 6th bowler to do so though, and there isnt one in the side at the moment.

Why is Attapatu batting down the order these days? If anyone has the technique to counter the seaming/ bouncing ball and get SL off to a have to a half decent start it would be him?

You have a fair point about appealing mate.

Murali's voceifeorous appealing must be annoying Umpires at times. And I suspect it had an effect on Tony Hill in giving that decision against Astle.

Anyway Valid Fair point from You . :)

By the way, I know very well you never called Sri Lankans monkeys mate. :)

I think it was Ming who took the wrong end of what you said.

I was only bringing McGrath's comments to make some fun of you. :)

At the top of the order he has struggled to get into double figures in the past few months - Hence as Captain he shrewdly put himself down the order . :D

I think the pressure on him to get some runs will be made all the more worse if he continues to stay at the top of the order and will end up in a very vicious cycle and quite possibly see the end of his International Cricket career.

BTW , with regard to Super Sub what do you think of Malinga as a Supersub.

But then that will only work if SL bat first.
