Official Sri Lanka in Netherlands thread

Can someone honestly explain why Dilhara Fernando is played as a change seamer? He's the fastest bowler in that team and he's got some useful variations, which will make him a potent new ball bowler. Given a battered old ball (likely to happen with the likes of Maharoof and Perera opening the bowling) he's only a target for easy boundaries at his pace. Splitting up his average, he's got it in the 20's opening the bowling, but struggles to get it under 30 otherwise, and given his style of bowling, one can guess. Besides, being the next best ODI bowler after Murali and Vaas, he should get the new ball, not rookies and fringe bowlers.

Netherlands have made a decent start chasing Sri Lanka's 8/313, they're currently 1/97 after 16 overs.

Excellent start from Netherlands, and poor effort from SriLankans.. Fernando being a main bowler should have opened the bowling attack in place of Maharoof..

Why on Earth do they even give the Netherlands ODI status....These should be List A games.
They are playing a whole lot better than the likes of Bangladesh & Zimbabwe

Kweek has van Bunge stopped bowling - I remember he was quite a useful leg-spinner...

What's the point in making them List A games? All it is a needless extra barrier to stop other countries playing cricket at the top level.

Anyway seems like a good performance from the Netherlands, losing by 55 runs. Just lacking someone to go on and make a big score really otherwise it could have been quite close.

Just got home from what was definitely a`good match from a Dutch PoV. Early on SL threatened to run away with it again, but two unchanged 10-over spells of tight medium pace bowling by De Leede and Borren kept the Lankans down to 313/8. Reekers was the best Dutch bowler, imo.

He then also opened the batting with some aggressive shots for a well-made 45. Unfortunately, he couldn't go on which turned out to be the story of the day. Van Troost managed three huge sixes (the first two resulting in the ball landing in a small canal, the third cleared the canal and landed on the bike path behind it...how very Dutch), but also got out just when he threatened to make a real match of it.

Got my first look of 16-year old Alexei Kervezee and was deeply deeply DEEPLY impressed. Great technique & unflappable (even when Jayawardene decideed to bring in two close fielders while the spinners were operating). Too bad he fell to the best catch of the day after making 18. But he'll be big...rumour has it Essex already signed him. Anyone know more about this?

Another rumour...there was no actual toss but Sri Lanka 'won' it both matches because the main sponsor was afraid there wouldn't be enough time for corporate hospitality if the Dutch batted first...too crazy to be true surely.

Oh, and Dutch trains suck.

How's the game going to progress if the developing cricket nations aren't given a shot at international cricket sometime?

That was an impressive show by Netherlands, they just need someone to lead them from the front as Scaly suggested..

There getting some decent starts and have in no way emabarresed themselves as regards batting. 250 ish in both innings against a team in such a great vain of form is great for a minnow.

IIRC he has been tried as an opening bowler and found to get carted quite early and lose confidance and go down hill from thereon.

So he himself prefers coming in as first change , and his bowling performances do confirm this quite clearly . He is far better coming on as first change when he gets a few wickets and can be given protection (ie Captain not taking Power Play 2 or 3 as necessary) . Coming on at the start he has been known to get Carted very early on and lose confidance and struggle from thereon.

I agree. If SL had rested any more players, SL may have suffered an embarassing defeat .( *which would have been great for Netherlands Cricket * )

Could have been a more closer finish if ten Doeschate played.
Was he not playing due to County Cricket commitments ?

What a shame , Shouldn't playing for your country be given more priority over County fixtures?

If its true that must surely then call into question whether these games can be given ODI status surely ?

Something the sponsors (who must be Dutch) may have missed is that stats show Team batting first in ODIs win a Lions share of the ODIs . So if it were true, then the sponsors have by their own intrusion quite significantly affected Netherlands chance of winning the ODIs even before a ball was bowled !! :@

If it were true and sponsors get their way , next we will find sponsors giving instruction on whether a Team should take Power Play or not and when they take it etc...etc.. subtle ways of increasing their value at the expense of affecting results !!:@
