Hard to tell really. England only played about 3 batsmen in this for some reason (Tongue at 7 FFS). But no Aussie spinner took a wicket.

I've also just learnt from this that Hardie was born in England, never knew that.

And if the wickets are anything like the BGT, then it's hardly worth playing one anyway. Rehan may get the gig on the basis he may score some runs.
TBF Both sides picked 0 batsmen in that game. Phillipe at 5 and will sutherland at 6 is far worse than tongue at 7.

Anyone have philippe's FC record for Australia-A only? I feel like i've seen him make a fair amount of runs for AUS-A but his career average is still only 30.

It's a funny old scorecard, Aus scored 370 and only three got into double figures or more.

The McKinney knock stands out for England, a shame he's not quite kicked on this season, he's still the most obvious threat to Crawley.

I certainly wouldn't be against Rehan being the spinner, but seeing as we've picked a kid from nowhere based on his release height and backed him to the hilt all the way until the Ashes, it would seem an odd time to drop him now
Still don't really get the release height thing, it's not like Lyon is especially tall.

But agreed, the team all but picks itself for the First Test. It's really only Wood v Carse for the final spot.

Whether we bother with a spinner in the pink ball Test seems more questionable.

On a FC basis, has he played in anything other than the Lions or SL games? He averages over 200 in those (and he didn't even get a bat in a Darwin runfest).
Some low scores against NZ-A and India-A, but I missed the recent SL-A game so make that 47.1

He made 94 & 69 in one match against SL-A back in 2022, then a string of low scores around a century vs NZ-A, and then 120 & 85 this year.

Imo england would rotate wood and archer rather then playing them together

Nice to see roe joot finally decoding his mediocre returns in Aust. Apparently he 'wanted a century too much' and covid and big Ben assaulting people etc

Of course had nothing to do with the extra bounce, Cummins/ Hazlewood or that half hearted jab with an angular bat

aside from maybe the DN test, you do need a spinner here, especially with the team England has. Are you really going to play five right arm seam bowlers? You’re better off playing three plus Stokes plus an extra batsman, because the fourth bloke won’t get a bowl unless stokes is hurt .

I'm sure we'll play a spinner in every game, so long as Stokes is fit to bowl.

Might play 4 seamers plus Stokes in the DN, but Atkinson, Carse, Woakes are all Number 8's and both Archer/Wood are handy too. Seems more likely they'd play the 5th bowler than an extra bat.

Whatever it takes!!!
It would be close to a cricketing miracle if Bashir had good returns in the Ashes. Australia is a graveyard for nearly all visiting spinners, even those who are well credentialed elsewhere. You occasionally find a quick who comes out of nowhere to do well here but I can't recall a spinner who's been mediocre everywhere else yet come to Aus and excelled.

England have finally got their bowlers fit at one time. I think them being injury prone is the reason they have to go with 4 bowlers plus Stokes. The bowlers will have to be managed over the series and their overs will need management in the game. Besides that is their template with Stokes anyway.

If our pitches stay green they can get away with it. That 5th position just needs to go to someone who can shut an end down and bowl overs. Preferably a spinner but given the circumstances it could be a seamer.
