I mentioned Yovich the other day in that post complaining about reversion to only-4-batters sides picked recently, but Yovich then did the hard work of shifting all the way to the unenviable position of opener. Same with Luke Woodcock. That's doing a job for the team where it's conceivable noone else is able and you don't want to be bringing young players into that position.

It's different from sides that should be picking a young batting talent at 5 or 6 but instead those comfortable spots are occupied by bowler-turned-batters who may not be held to actually scoring runs. Also see HDS's complaint about Wellington above. Though tbf they have just the one experienced player in the entire top 6, so there are gaps everywhere. I know they're missing Blundell and Conway, but where is the rest of their batting?

^^ also missing Ravindra and Troy Johnson.

And Neesham as top 6 allrounder.

In some ways it's a golden opportunity for young batsmen in Wellington to actually get a chance.

Yes, but still really only have 1 of their in-theory top 6 available. Or, if assume PS occurs during a test window and Conway and Blundell are away (and Georgeson and Allen are their now semi-permanent replacements). Still only 3 of their top 6.

Bracewell could have moved up 1 to protect Greenwood on debut. But no protecting Bhula. As for Georgeson, he's in his right place.

Georgeson is a good opener. That's his natural spot. Bhula should have been at 5 ideally and greenwood at 6. Finn now is a black cap, surely he can shoulder some responsibility. Bracewell should have batted at 3. Who should have opened? No idea. We don't have one.

Neil Broom playing for Otago 'A' today? in a one-dayer. Is he only on a white ball contract or something?

My understanding is that he is contracted but only available for white ball cricket. Similar for Finnie (but he made himself available for 1st PS game as a one-off due to injuries etc) and Astle.

Interesting article in ODT:

Has Zak Gibson ever had any winter's down in Lincoln having his action worked on? Or has he missed them? Or do they even still do them?

Gives the vibe of a guy just ambling in at the nets and bowling some looseners.

I'm no bowling action guru, just hunch there is something there to be unlocked.

Nick Kelly has had a great start to the season - finally providing the strength Otago brought him down for. Was the top of the season's run-scoring charts the other day and the 57 today temporarily puts him back there.
Helped by that one University Oval road but Otago's batting not looking like a prank lineup for the first time in years, with Renwick scoring runs too.

Bowling charts ftr
Dem medium pacers are killing it just like previous seasons, though with Sheat largely supplanted by Shipley. Sears and Tickner doing a little to restore fast-bowler pride, albeit at much higher averages and econ rates.

TIL Shipley is probably statistically the worst white ball bowler in the country.

Averages of 60 and 59 for one dayers and t20 from 45 games combined.

Respectable FC record though.

Matt Henry greatly enjoying the county-ification of NZ domestic FC cricket. Hell of a guy to have waiting in the wings for next year's tour of England should one of Soult have an injury.

Haha his economy is awful as well. Surprised he keeps getting picked in it.

Good engine rooming from Chu and bowlers. Wonder if it's a sign pitch has flattened out though - Alexandra is usually pretty flat isn't it?

Flattened from watching a little on YT yesterday and today. Randell was getting some good seam movement yesterday morning. Also no Kuggeleijn since late yesterday, assume injury, so lots of military medium on show.
