Bruce for T20's, can't see Blundell/Seifert jumping Watling and Ronchi this season. I think Ronch's still has something to give, despite his awful record of late.. He still shows domestic cricket is too easy for him. T20 keeper for the next season, if he doesn't score runs, get rid of him. 35 years old now. He should be in the ODI squad, him and Watling are complete opposites in terms of batting, don't see why they can't be picked for certain pitches.

Watling can't bat outside the Top 4; so if he plays, it's likely either that Williamson opens with Guptill, Taylor at 3, Watling at 4... or Watling opens.
If you're wanting a tail end hitter, it's Ronchi.
Yep, agreed. If you're batting him at lower than 5, that's a job Ronchi is better at - regardless of how mud he's been in ODIs.

Headed along to the Firebirds vs Melbourne Stars game at the Basin today. Was a surprisingly large crowd for a midweek fixture (at a rough guess about 50 times larger than a midweek Super Smash game I went to last year).

Firebirds batted pretty well, Blundell (who opened with Marshall - no Papps), Murdoch and Pollard scoring the majority of the runs and looking best at the crease. Pollard and Murdoch got out on the last ball of the 19th and the first ball of the 20th which stopped the charge and they ended up with 164.

Stars never really looked in any danger of missing out, got there with three overs left, and Luke Wright scored a great century. Whoever the 12 for the Firebirds dropped an absolute sitter which didn't help.

Overall the Firebirds did not too badly though. I'm not a fan of the idea of NZ teams in the Big Bash, but it's fun to see them play each other. I wonder if the top two teams from each comp could have a quick playoff at the end of the comps? Would be pretty interesting viewing, I reckon.

What I'd like to see, is guys clearly earmarked for positions at the top level that need filling. Ie say Tim Seifert is the man we see as the incumbent limited overs keeper, and work hard on him to make sure he's ready when required. If it's Blundell, or if he's the guy seen as the longer version option, all well and good. Then, we see Glen Phillips, Chapman, Cleaver, whoever as the next wave of ODI talent. You'd like to think that was happening rather than 'oh Player X did well in this List A campaign, let's throw him in'. .
It is happening . NZC do this with their contracted Winter Training Squad . Some guys you mention were in it this winter and another Squad member played his first ODI recently.. Unhelpfully so far this season NZC has had too many long term injured players on their Central Contract list. That List could be sub divided into three i.e.: All formats , Test only , white ball only categories. And T20i selection e.g.: v Bangladesh should be used to bring on new players. See if they can handle the bigger stage . Who cares who wins bi- lateral T20's - they are primarily money spinner games with entertainment the priority.

That's great to hear. Had a look at the scorecard, and I enjoyed JW Dernbach's figures of 4-0-48-1. A class signing.

So 50 people turned up?

Wow, I didn't know Jeets had that in his repertoire.

Tbf most offies probably do have a hacky ball that goes straight or moves the other way slightly, though usually extremely easy to pick.

Can't say he's displayed much in either of his Firebirds stints (so far in this one, anyway). Not really sure why they got him back. They did the same with Shaun Tait year after year for a while, despite his contributions going from ok to absolutely terrible over the course of the few seasons. I know they build the relationships with the players and it's probably tough to attract new talent, but it still seems pointless to me.

Looking forward to the game on TV this evening, assuming the New Plymouth weather cooperates.

Yes indeed. Sky's televised Domestic cricket content began last Sunday with an excelllent contest between the Aces and Volts on a sunny afternoon with a decent crowd in attendance. In stark contrast to last year. T20 is the Rugby Sevens of cricket and both teams embraced the format where dot balls are the enemy of the batting side and freebies the bane of the bowling side. The pivotal individual performance with the bat which ultimately decided a tight encounter was described by Trevor Auger, in his Musings on the Auckland website , as a "masterclass in short-form batting". Great entertainment.

I get that the weather hasn't been great today, but is there anyone at this game at all? Pathetic crowd.

Anyway, Rance was superb in his first over, but Brownlie and Anderson are starting to look a bit dangerous.
