I'm guessing the pitch was rather more benign that it appeared. I did think it looked like some Hobart pitches I've seen in the past, greenish with cracks but the movement never as great as expected. Gabriel being off colour and expensive would have put a massive dampener on proceedings. Commentary saying that it was quite hot and Richards got heat stroke.

Sir Viv is ok now thankfully.

I think it's s good cricket wicket and 350 would normally be par. With our batting though of say India are ahead.

A good bowling performance in general though, only Gabriel let us down.

Excellent day for Jimbo, he did just the job required of a spinner on day 1 of a test.

Last series here at Jamaica Roston Chase man of match for his 5 fer & 100 (big) in draw test

Today he not gets much support from day 1 track only Cornwall in his 27 overs 69 runs removes Pujara for 6 but good game so far for him with 2 catches too,on debut

india 264 for 5 in 90 overs
vihari might finish Rohit's test career

vihari 42 not out
pant 27 not out

Shame Kohli got out, but reasonable position to be in given that they elected to field. Pitch will probably be at its best for batting on days 2 and 3 so we need to keep them out there as long as possible tomorrow.

Roach and Holder were really good.

I'm really really not looking forward to watching us bat on here. India will hit the same length as Holder and Roach and our batsmen are simply not as good as India's. Judging by how lucky a number of India's batsmen were in surviving length deliveries they weren't in control of, this is not easy to bat on.

This series features some outstanding seamers in Bumrah, Ishant, Shami, Roach and Holder. Gabriel is excellent in his own way but not to the metronomic standard of the others as he blows hot and cold.

Batsmen like Hetmyer need to start delivering more, the talent is there but haven't seen the application to grind out the long innings.

Did you see the stat they shared yesterday? When a Windies batsman makes 25 or more they only convert it to 50 or more 28% of the time. By some 10% the worst of the test playing nations. Just not good enough.

We've had a concerted effort to develop pacers over the last 10 years which is clearly bearing fruit. Now it's time to really focus on the next gen of batsmen. IMHO Lara and Sarwan shouldn't be spending so much time with this lot but the best FC batters and the under 19s.

Yeah. Pakistan were on top in that stat so not sure it's the be all and end all. But WI batsmen need to get better at converting starts for sure.

They've consciously decided to go with pace bowler friendly conditions and the Dukes ball so it's not going to be easy. Even England and SA are struggling to dominate opponents at home. Always a double edged sword because visiting quicks will also enjoy it.

Target 1: Survive Bumrah's opening spell
Target 2: at least one batsman convert a start

Very good point and not something that is mentioned too often. But it is possible to score runs and is no excuse for giving it away after working hard to get a start.
