Game in the balance after Kennett burst
1st Test - Day 3 - Cricket Web XI vs Sri Lanka - Galle International Stadium

David Kennett took 4 wickets and was a key player in bowling out Sri Lanka for 176. Cricket Web XI fought back brilliantly after surrendering a slim lead of 33 to their hosts. In their second turn at the crease Sri Lanka started pleasantly with a partnership of 44 for the first wicket. Mike Wilson then supplied the golden arm to dismiss Michael Vandort (9), but Malinga Warnapura continued to bat with big confidence and well-timed offside strokes.

Neil Pickup chimed in with his second wicket of the match, crucially that of Sangakkara (24), but Sri Lanka went to lunch on top on 112-2. Warnapura cruised past 50 in the afternoon session, then fended at a sharp riser from Kennett and was caught in the gully. Kennett was fired up by the breakthrough and settled into outstanding rhythm. He beat the bat several times before he found Samaraweera's edge for 8. And less than 3 overs later he snared the big fish- Mahela Jayawardene lbw for 32.

From 146-5 there was no repeat of the first innings fightback. Chris Butler got Dilshan lbw in a wicket-maiden, his only over of the innings, and Nick Borcich took two late wicket to hurry the end. Sri Lanka lost their last 8 wickets for 52 runs but still set a tricky target of 210 for CW XI. Two hours remained for the tourists to start their chase. The openers played well enough in an opening stand of 41, without alarm.

Muttiah Muralitharan entered the attack in place of Amerasinghe and immediately began to apply pressure to the batsmen. After a tricky few overs he got a thin edge from Mørk (20), and Prasanna Jayawardene held a sharp catch behind the wicket. Pete Young moved into the 20s with a pull shot against Mendis, then snicked a thin edge to Mahela Jayawardene at short-leg. The Sri Lankan captain understood the importance of the wicket, and tossed the ball into the air in delight.

His namesake dropped a very tough chance off Butler just short of the close, and CW XI ended the day on 67-2. They will start day four needing 143 runs with 8 wickets in hand a crumbling pitch at their feet.

Classic Test Match in store here: lots of us putting our hands up when it is most important. We know we have strength in depth and a middle and lower order full of guts and fight - but let's not have to use it.

Here's to 1-0.

Webbers crumble to Mendis on fourth morning
1st Test - Morning, Day 4 - Cricket Web XI vs Sri Lanka - Galle International Stadium

Ajantha Mendis completed a stunning 5-wicket haul to pile the pressure on Cricket Web XI heading into lunch on the fourth day. The mystery spinner bowled through the majority of the morning session and bamboozled the batsmen with his endless variations and unerring accuracy.

The trials came early on from Muttiah Muralitharan, but it was not until his younger teammate entered the attack that the breakthrough came. Chris Butler misjudged the flight of an offbreak and was struck on the front pad with the ball in line. He was sent on his way for 15 and invited young Will Kerr to the crease. The batsman looked at relative ease against Muralitharan, but twice edged Mendis past the close field before he pushed the ball into the waiting hands of short extra cover.

Again Alex Blackman entered the pressure cooker, on the back of his excellent maiden ton. But despite his confidence from the first innings, he looked uncertain against Mendis and was beaten by his first two deliveries. Two balls later he pushed past a Murali doosra and presented an easy stumping opportunity. But Prasanna Jaywardene, with hard gloves, missed the easy opportunity and gave Blackman another chance to be a hero. The right-hander gave another chance, though a difficult one, low to the right of Mendis. The bowler could not clutch on.

Mendis was not out of the game for long, however. Andrew Cloete, having held his nerve well on the way to 66, pushed forward to an offbreak and was out lbw. From 161-5 the score slumped to 165-6 at the demise of Mike Wilson, caught-and-bowled, and at the end of the last over before lunch, Dave Richards was again outfoxed by Mendis. As in the first innings he looked clueless to his the spinner's guile, and squared up to edge through to Prasanna Jayawardene. The hopes of CW XI are now pinned on the shoulders of their newest Test cricketer. Alex Blackman will resume after lunch on 11, with 35 still needed.

Pressure on Blackman to see CW XI home
1st Test - Afternoon, Day 4 - Cricket Web XI vs Sri Lanka - Galle International Stadium

Cricket Web XI started a tense session with little room for error and needing 35 runs with 3 wickets in hand. Immediately there was drama in the form of a dropped catch. The culprit was the hero of the previous session- Mendis dropped a return catch off Borcich. His presence at the crease was assured for a while, and at the close of the over he walked over to clubmate Alex Blackman to discuss the approach.

The following over Blackman applied the tactics, twice chipping down the track to lash Muralitharan back overhead for boundaries. The offspinner was hurried out of the attack and replaced by Amerasinghe, but the bowler could do little better as Blackman hit his fourth ball behind point for four more. The attempts of Sri Lanka to apply pressure fell flat and both Borcich and Blackman looked at ease as they cruised past 200. Blackman continued to excel off the back foot and slapped Mendis past midwicket for another boundary.

Muralitharan replaced him with the scores level and Blackman calmly defended the first few deliveries before charging at him again and rounding off the match with his 7th boundary. He ended unbeaten on 42, while Borcich contributed an invaluable 28-ball innings of 6.
