West Indies v Pakistan

Scorecard
Ball by Ball

Fresh off their Pepsi Asian Series win, Pakistan were outclassed by the West Indies on a slow wicket at Chandigarh. The West Indies recovered from 31-2 to beat Pakistan by 8 wickets, pacing a run chase of 230 superbly.

Devon Smith clubbed the first ball of the 49th over by Mohammad Asif for six, bringing up his maiden one-day international hundred with the blow. He collected another six off a top-edged hook shot to end the over, and a total of 16 runs came at the crucial stage. Before then, the West Indies needed 17 from the final 12 balls, but entered the final over needing just a single. Summing up Pakistan's day in the field, Marlon Samuels was dropped to start the 50th, and the West Indies ran the winning single.

Earlier Pakistan started slowly against the West Indies seamers, though Imran Nazir and Shoaib Malik added 143 runs for the first wicket. Finally Powell enticed Nazir to hole out and end his 113-ball innings, and the Pakistan middle order fell away. Abdul Razzaq (25 not out) and Mohammad Salman (17 not out) played well to ensure that Pakistan set a competitive total of 229-5.

Chris Gayle fell early on, playing on to Mohammad Asif for 6, and when Shivnarine Chanderpaul was run out for 12, it seemed the West Indies would struggle to address the target. But Devon Smith and Samuels saw off the new ball threat and scored freely against the secondary bowlers. Saqlain Mushtaq was surprisingly ineffective, though Shahid Afridi was impressive as some measure of compensation. Afridi should have had Smith caught behind for 44, but for a noball call. The legspinner also had confident leg-before-wicket shouts against Smith and Samuels turned down.

Smith moved along nicely and collected regular boundaries in the buildup to the total. However, a series of 4 overs for 12 in the buildup to the 49th stunted the run chase and set the West Indies back dramatically. When Asif set out to bowl the penultimate over, many would have thought the game to be firmly with Pakistan. Heroic batsmanship by Smith changed that, and the West Indies have started well in their press toward another Champions Trophy semifinal.

Pakistan 229-5 (50 overs)
Shoaib Malik 85 [129], Imran Nazir 66 [113]
DR Smith 3-43 [10], DB Powell 2-45 [8]

West Indies 230-2 (49.1 overs)
DS Smith 111* (147), MN Samuels 86* (111)
Mohammad Asif 1-48 [10]

West Indies won by 8 wickets.
Man of the Match: DS Smith

Ouch. That was a very good effort though, and the fact that we came so close against Australia (albeit an unusually sloppy one) bodes well for the rest of the tournament.

Cricket Web XI 320 for seven (50 overs)
RJ Dauth 66 (68), I Markus 52 (66), BJ Goff 47 (45)

India v Sri Lanka
at Sardar Patel Stadium

Scorecard
Ball By Ball

Hosts India kept their hopes alive after a clinical bowling and fielding effort on a worn wicket in Ahmedabad, despite Muralitharan's magic. Sri Lanka lacked the required zip at the death, despite chasing a moderate target.

Earlier, India had failed to capitalise on a solid start by Sehwag, Ganguly and Dravid. They were at 103 for one when they felt the need to accelerate, but against the wiles of Murali they quickly found themselves in trouble, though Sehwag did strike him for three fours in an over before he was caught by Silva on 54. Tendulkar hit the next over, bowled by Bandara, for 10, then smashed a huge shot down the throat of Vaas.

Dhoni rebuilt reasonably well, but the innings struggled to gain momentum after this, and the Sri Lankans made regular breakthroughs to bowl India out for 231. It should have been enough, especially when Jayasuriya and Tharanga hit 105 for the opening wicket. However, Khan and Patel had kept the run rate down well, and with the other batsmen unable to find the boundary off Ganguly's bowling while Harbhajan bowled a beauty to clean bowl Tharanga, the Sri Lankans wilted. In the end, they needed eight off the final over, bowled by Munaf Patel - he rapped the pads consistently, with three vociferous appeals, and alert fielding ensured that the batsmen didn't take off for the leg-byes. With Vaas run out attempting a suicidal single, Sri Lanka had to be content with 228 for six, and the road to the semi-final now seems very long.

India 231 all out (48.5 ovs)
V Sehwag 54
M Muralitharan 4/39 (10), WPUJC Vaas 3/30 (8)

Sri Lanka 228 for six (50 overs)
ST Jayasuriya 67, DPMDS Jayawardene 65*, WU Tharanga 50
Z Khan 2/38 (9), SC Ganguly 2/43 (10)

India won by three runs
Man of the Match: S. C. Ganguly (India)

Australia v Sri Lanka

Scorecard

Australia completed a professional performance for a much easier victory, as Sri Lanka collapsed needing to finish with a huge run rate. Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist set a huge platform with their opening stand of 124, and though Murali and Maharoof took wickets, Clarke continued his scintillating run of form with a blazing 50 before dragging on a widish Maharoof delivery.

Once again the tail provided useful runs, and Australia managed to bat out the fifty overs, though it was only the Hayden/Clarke partnership who managed to scramble past 20. It proved quite enough on a disintegrating wicket, however. Tait struck early, after a great Ponting catch, and though Atapattu and Sangakkara tried to keep up with the rate of six an over, they were tied down by Mitchell Johnson. Ponting had the luxury of using up the powerplays by the 20th over, and the spinners did the rest; in desperation, the tail slogged out, and Symonds and Clarke got cheap wickets.

Australia 289 for nine (50 overs)
ML Hayden 97, MJ Clarke 50, AC Gilchrist 49
M Muralitharan 3/46, MF Maharoof 3/76

Sri Lanka 180 all out (39.1 overs)
KC Sangakkara 49
A Symonds 4/46 [9], MJ Clarke 3/15 [4.1]

Australia won by 109 runs
Man of the Match: M. L. Hayden (Australia)

South Africa v Pakistan
at Brabourne Stadium

Scorecard
Ball by Ball

South Africa's Champions Trophy dreams are all but over after they were soundly beaten by Pakistan in a crucial Pool D fixture today. Both teams suffered defeat in their opening games, meaning that a victory was virtually necessary to ensure a reasonable press toward a semfinal spot.

Pakistan put South Africa in and Mohammad Asif returned the wickets of openers AB de Villiers and Graeme Smith in an expensive opening spell. Jacques Kallis and Boeta Dippenaar looked good with 49 and 42 respectively, but it was left up to Mark Boucher (64 not out) and Justin Kemp (59 not out) to lift South Africa to a challenging total of 259-5.

But just as it had against New Zealand, the South African bowling came apart. One dimensional as ever, the seam attack was thrashed about, first by Imran Nazir, then by everyone else. Yasir Hameed topscored with 82, but a surprisingly responsible 41 not out from Shahid Afridi guided Pakistan home with more than 5 overs to spare.

South Africa 259-5 (50 overs)
MV Boucher 64* [74], JM Kemp 59* [67], JH Kallis 49 [49]
Mohammad Asif 2-53 [10], Mohammad Khalil 2-57 [10]

Pakistan 260-5 (44.5 overs)
Yasir Hameed 82 [103], Imran Nazir 63 [71], Shahid Afridi 41* [40]
SM Pollock 3-48 [10], JH Kallis 2-46 [10]

Pakistan won by 5 wickets.
Man of the Match: Yasir Hameed

Glad SA are on the bottom. Not so happy with SL being on the bottom of the other pool, though.

CW looking okay, there. Good NRR, really.

India v Cricket Web XI

Scorecard
Ball By Ball

Goff, Cloete and Dauth cantered to a six-wicket victory for Cricket Web XI, while Sehwag never quite got going in a rather unspectacular encounter outside Mohali today.

India won the toss and chose to bat, with the Webheads never looking particularly threatening in the field. The opening partnership of Ganguly and Sehwag put on 73 without much resistance, before Ganguly slogged Camps out to Gough. That was to set the tone of the innings - batsmen got settled, but the rate looked too poor as Sehwag hogged up deliveries, and they had to go over the top and into the hands of fielders. Markus held catches off both Dravid and Tendulkar, continuing a fine tournament in the field, and Halsey got rid of Kaif after a low catch by Pickup.

The death bowling was, however, commendable. Four wickets fell for seven runs, with seamers Gough and Watt not getting particularly more stick than the spinners had earlier, which kept the target down to a managable 247. India nourished some hope when Markus was run out without scoring in the second over, but Cloete and Goff battled with more than one eye on the scoreboard, keeping things going just as required. Their partnership of 134 eased the nerves of many a CWLander, and Butler, Dauth and Camps had an easy job of taking the remaining runs off Zaheer, Agarkar and Munaf at the death. Harbhajan tried to pitch it up, and was rewarded with both wickets of Cloete and Goff, but was also the most expensive regular bowler.

India 246 for eight (50 overs)
V Sehwag 93; TC Halsey 2-40 [10]

CW XI 247 for four (47.5 overs)
BJ Goff 77, AP Cloete 68; Harbhajan Singh 2-56 [10]

Cricket Web XI won by six wickets
Man of the Match: BJ Goff (Cricket Web XI)

Excellent death bowling by Dwayne Bravo and Chris Gayle helped the West Indies hang on for a tense 4-run victory over New Zealand in their crucial Pool D clash. Bravo and Gayle finished with figures of 1-45 and 3-52 respectively, with the latter dismissing the dangerous trio of Chris Harris, Craig McMillan and Jacob Oram.

The West Indies set a challenging total of 263-9, largely due to the batting of Gayle (82) and Chanderpaul (50). Shane Bond was excellent in taking 6 for 44, though his 9th over cost 17 runs. Corey Collymore came to the crease with 2 balls remaining in the 50th over, and he clobbered a crucial boundary off Bond and collected a single to end the innings.

New Zealand started chasing well. The platform was laid by Peter Fulton and Stephen Fleming to the tune of 45 runs, then the middle order carried on from the good work with positive batting. Ross Taylor was particularly impressive in scoring 62 from 67 balls. He was dismissed by Collymore just when he looked to be taking New Zealand to an unassailable position, with the required run rate having dipped under 6 per over.

Styris and Harris looked to continue the positive play, but they were stifled by Bravo and Gayle before falling in turn. McMillan clubbed an enormous six off of Gayle, then was dropped by same bowler. The next ball he faced from Gayle resulted in his dismissal for 7. The offspinner returned the wicket of Styris for 30, and Oram looked ominous in launching his first ball for six. He was out for 7 to end the same over.

Collymore dealt for Vettori and Franklin was run out for a duck. Bravo bowled a sharp penultimate over, costing 4 runs, to ensure that 10 runs were needed from the 50th, bowled by Collymore. Some 3 singles came from the first 4 balls, and after a loud lbw shout, Bond finally faced the 6th delivery needing to hit a six to tie. He swiped, edged and was dropped by Ramdin, scampering through for a single in a failed attempt at heroics.

West Indies 261-9 (50 overs)
CH Gayle 82 [114], S Chanderpaul 50 [66], MN Samuels 35 [39]
SE Bond 6-44 [10]

New Zealand 257-9 (50 overs)
RL Taylor 62 [67], PG Fulton 39 [64], SB Styris 35 [38]
CH Gayle 3-52 [10], CD Collymore 2-54 [9]

West Indies won by 4 runs.
Man of the Match: CH Gayle
