@Beamer this must be one of the biggest mysteries in the world of cricket

How can Shai Hope literally average DOUBLE in ODIs to tests

My gut feeling is that there must be something terribly wrong in the WI TEST dressing room for a guy to go from genuine world class in one format to a plodder in a relatively similar one

T20 v tests is possible because they’re totally different games
It has happened before , Michael Bevan was an ATG ODI player and an elite Sheffield Shield player but couldn't crack Test cricket, Rassie Van Der Dussen a similar player to Shai Hope struggled in Tests but has a 50 avg in odi cricket, Martin Guptill , Jos Buttler etc

Bevan was an acknowledged mental midget

Assume that Hope is the same

I have a couple of theories. One is that he is weak to average against the short ball. ODI rules and limitations mean he can adapt, survive those balls and score of others.

He also stays legside of the ball to open up the off side and so really struggles with pace bowling seaming into him.

I think those are the two reasons he sucks in tests. His fitness is superb, so it's not that. What is weird is that he has such a superb fc record, especially when you takeaway his test data. Maybe test quality bowling exploits these weaknesses and he hasn't found a way to adapt?

My pick for Australia's T20 side.

Short Owen M Marsh Inglis Green Maxwell Dwarshuis Bartlett Johnson Ellis Zampa

Haze should be packed up with care and sent home. If David comes in it is for Dwarshuis but that leaves a bowler short and not much in the top six to make up the extra overs, notwithstanding the presence of Maxwell. As I'm going that way I prefer Dwarshuis to Abbott and he's as good a batsman at least and probably a better one in T20. Aaron Hardie is close too but I'm not sure about his form.

I'd be surprised if they pick five bowlers. Maxwell, Owen & Short all bowled a fair bit in the MLC so I think they'll just get overs from them and have David at #7. Otherwise I agree.

Short Owen M Marsh Inglis David Maxwell Hardie Bartlett Johnson Ellis Zampa

I think this will be the XI for tomorrow. I don't think Green will play ahead of David.. If Green plays, it will be for Owen.

wut all of the ones you named are batting all-rounders at worst except the keeper. Presumably Green still can't bowl too I guess. But you've got 1 too many bowlers at least there and a batsman short

I forgot about Short but didn't think much of Owen's bowling and isn't Marsh a bit like Green and can't bowl atm? If Marsh can bowl then I'd swap out Dwarshuis for Hardie or David.

Short and Owen are both regular bowlers for their t20 sides and just got a lot of wickets in mlc. Marsh and Green both are batting as pure bats and won't bowl. But like tjb said, pretty much everyone else in that side bowls.

Owen's numbers don't look great and I was thinking that puts most of the 5th bowling on Maxwell. But then there's Short too so I suppose Hardie could come in for Dwarshuis.

So what on earth is our T20 team going to look like tomorrow? The two biggest issues in recent matches have been our opening partnerships (Johnson Charles!!!) and powerplay bowling (everyone not named Akheil Hossein).

So I expect Shai to open or they may go with young Jewel Andrew if they really want to try something. I also expect them to play Jediah Blades and his left arm swing with the new ball to try and take more powerplay wickets. I think they'll want an off spin option so I imagine Chase will play. So my predicted XI is:

Lewis
Hope (c, wk)
Powell
Hety
Rutherford
Chase
Russell
Motie
Hossein
Joseph
Blades

Reserves: Shepherd, King, Andrew, Holder, Shepherd, Forde

Not necessarily.

Michael Bevan
Martin Guptill
Roger Twose etc

Motie is in the form of his life right now. He was bowling beautifully in the GSL. Having Imran Tahir as your skipper reallly helps also.
