I mean if he does start getting it right he's going to be incredibly difficult to play. Not just off the surface but the ball is drifting a long way in the breeze to boot

Another ordinary ball from Lyon gets a wicket, some bounce again but a batsman of Williamson's class should be better at dealing with that.

Crazy to think that he could end up with as many test wickets as Shane Warne by the end of his test career.

Warne was an all time great test spinner, Lyon is a good test spinner but he isn't a great test spinner let alone an all time great test spinner like Warne.
Taking 500 wickets is worthy of being great imo, all time great is another debate, but to have such a long career bowling offspin primarily in Australia is extremely difficult..I doubt any Aussie offspinner will ever come close to Lyon's tally.

Just watched the little Lyon to KW montage. Kane mate, I know you're a God, but he's an offie bowling in New Zealand. Just ****ing destroy him, don't block him. He doesn't deserve to live in our nation.

He averages 17 in NZ lmao. That's like Axar Patel on dustbowl numbers

Yeah I think being aggressive against Lyon here could be a good plan - so long as it's a clearly thought out plan of where you are trying to score those runs, and how you are going to bail out if it's not there for you. Reason being that he hasn't really settled into a spell, I think he's struggling a bit with the wind but is being given a lot of assistance by the pitch so even though his lengths are inconsistent he's getting away with it a bit. Trying to hit him out of the attack before he settles could be an idea; otherwise if he does settle it will be a very difficult afternoon

That's nuts. We often crumble to half competent spinners when they tour, but we're dearly afraid of playing a specialist spinner in NZ.

Infuriating to be a spinner in this country. You're mostly only going to get a gig when there's a sc tour and batsmen just assume foreign spinners won't get any turn and be as easy to deal with as Plunkett shield tweakers. And no one really learns.

Yeah and the last few years we've had some pitches that actually have turned. The Mount a few times, the basin here, even last year (or year before? Can't remember) Maharaj took a bag but we haven't really learnt from it

Didn't see that but scoring runs against weaker attacks pretty much perfectly fits the Latham we know
He didn't make his routine ton in Asia or capitalise on a weak SA, so I think he is genuinely out of nick and not just doing his usual flatter to deceive.

He's been fortunate to get such a long run in the Australian test team with not any real competition for his spot from other Aussie spinners.

Greg Matthews was quite a good off spinner too and a far better batsman than Lyon but his career was cut short when Shane Warne arrived.

This is ballsy from Young but in his effort to turn himself into a real opener, he's taken away almost all of his offside scoring shots.

Nah Lyon is a good player. There's degrees between Shane Warne and Bryce McGain, as Australia eventually figured out when trying to replace Warne.
