With the selectors hat on, I would build in the hope of having an available top 6 of McCullum, Guptill, Williamson, Styris, Taylor, Ryder, and not necessarily in that batting order in the lineup.

One feels Broom doesn't fit the needs of the team, and while Pinga was 'ok' against the mighty Deshis, its was more obvious from his second and third knocks that his gameplan is better suited to test cricket.

#7 is almost a specialist batsman position in this lineup as well, should be Oram/Franklin or Stewart contesting this and providing injury cover.

Vettori, Bond, + bowlers and it's a great lineup worthy of finals, barring injuries and big form slumps. Plenty of experience + talent there.

But I can just see the selectors muddling through a buildup to the world cup though with players like Broom getting a lot more gametime.
Hey, good post. I think I'll indulge my obsession with selection and batting orders to stop lurking and respond :)

Cannot understand what is happening with the batting order in ODIs at the moment, particularly Franklin 5 and Broom 6. The lower middle order and 7-9 are traditionally a strength of the NZ ODI team, with a lot of hitting power. But at the moment it looks muddled and askew, and consequently weak. Vettori and Oram are not best suited to being our death hitters IMO.

I think Vettori is now best suited to be an accumulator at number 6, so with Oram at 8 (still praying for a recovery in batting form) we need an attacking number 7. Franklin and Stewart seem to fit the bill but the selectors don't have Stewart in the frame and Franklin is misplaced at 5. Would be happy for Franklin to play virtually as a specialist bat at 7 and only bowl 2-5 overs. Mills when he's back makes a good slogger at 9.

Still remain to be convinced about Styris - he deserves another chance but I don't know that he'll take it. Also you've left out Elliott from your top 6 - he should be an automatic pick at the moment.

Looking forward to this series very much, though very disappointed we don't have Bond and O'Brien to throw at the more vulnerable looking Australian batting for the test series. Without them IMO we don't have any bowlers with the pure firepower or class that Pakistan and WI used to put Australia under pressure, so we're back to chasing leather.

You know how for the Champions Trophy they had those fat squads that they trim down later?
Pinga and Stewart were both in the prelim squad, so Stewart must be hanging somewhere round the edge of the selection frame.
Considering Pinga's had his chance, his time must be coming soon.

I wish they'd bloody hurry up tho
Not seeing how he'd go against Bangas may possibly bite us on the bum this series.

Rob Nicol had a good one-day season too, he'd be someone I'd also like to see get a go.

Quite a thrashing here in the women's game. Awesome stuff.
Indeed. I wasn't home to see any of the match but I assume it was played on the same pitch that'll be used for tonight - any comments as to its nature and whether we're in for what proved to be a low scoring match like the women's T20?

Do they push the boundaries out for the men's game? The straight boundaries were in an absolute mile and they're shortish to begin with. Would be ridiculous for the men's game, albeit not really surprising.
