*Official* 4th Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, 4 - 8 Mar 2021

just because someone else does it doesn't make it a good thing

also he had resigned for two years by that point
Never argued otherwise. I personally find it distasteful, and somewhat uncharacteristic of Modi to let it happen, but there have been precedents before is what I am pointing out. Or say the case of Stalingrad for example. Or Alexandria in antiquity.

As to Mandela- Resigned yes (thanks for correcting that), dead no. The supposed rationale for naming the stadium after Modi was that it was conceptualised when Modi was President of Gujarat Cricket Association. And he is no longer occupying that post. Given that iconic stadiums in India like Chepauk or Bengaluru are named after illustrious administrators, I find it in line with established precedent as well.

I also find it distasteful that some stadiums worldwide are up for naming rights based on who pay for it.

Yes, but it is obviously a very bad look, even if it is done with decent intentions (which I do not think this was, btw) when the person is also the executive leader of the country.

The worst part is how much we are ending up discussing politics here in a cricket thread. :( At least for this reason, they should have let it be the Sardar Patel Stadium. Also, if it was named so when it was opened, it is a different story. It is a very obvious propaganda move. I hate those, whichever side of the political divide they are from. But then again, in India, this is basically an everyday issue. :(

^^ I like how ours, the Providence Stadium, is named after the plot of land where sugarcane fields used to be...

Also, the village is named Providence.
