NZ domestic season 2023/24

Thank you. I prefer this ‘organic’ movement than richer teams ‘poaching’ players. My assumption was that the great bulk of the provincial teams’ revenue came through central distribution from New Zealand cricket and hence they were all operating with similar budgets however this is just conjecture.

I had this confirmed yesterday by a NZ pro cricketer who is currently playing in English club cricket.

Not obviously for money reasons. Often for a different opportunity or because they want to live cities for family reasons. Subsequently, they might move back to their original team once they’ve forged a reputation.
That's basically what Finn Allen is doing now?

Otago's addition. An out of sorts opening batsman who couldn't buy a run last year. Can't see him getting much of a run, unless Hamish Rutherford only plays limited overs cricket. Or if Georgeson moves down the order. Four day cricket should be Rutherford and Cumming opening. Limited overs Rutherford and Gibson/Chu in 50 overs (although I hope they give Gibson a go). A strange pick up.

That's plenty of pace bowlers – the majority of the squad, counting the ARs too. Henry, Latham, Mitchell, Nicholls, Jamieson, and Sodhi have central contracts. Fletcher moved to Auckland; Rippon and Rae moved from Otago. Coburn retired and van Woerkom uncontracted yet, and he might not be given he didn't play after November. One more contract to come: guessing it must be Mariu.

So pending the final contract, Newton and Bhula cut and Allen and Georgeson have left. I guess Newton'll be 35 when the season comes round but still feels like he'd be a better bet than Hartshorn and Snedden, or for that matter McPeake.

Indeed. This still looks a very ropey seam bowling attack. Given that van Beek is inconsistent and the injury problems that Sears and Smith have had.

Sears and Fisher getting contracts despite being injury prone means there must be at least some chance their recoveries are on track (???). Fingers crossed. With Severin, Foulkes, Abbas, Clark, Sunde, Keene, MHay, Parkes and a few others as the younger players, the future of batting and seam-bowling allrounders looks promising ((if the allrounders don't all get injured). Bowling less-so, we are really reliant on a couple of names to come through for NZ.

The only name listed above that I hadn't seen before is Harjot Johal - seam bowler in early 20s. Didn't know Fletcher moving to Auckland either.

Otago's outgoings are 3 plays: Rae, Finnie, Rippon.

The 2 incoming are Georgeson and Parkes (who didn't actually have a domestic contract last year)

1 more (16th) contract place to go.

That means they still need a seam bowler. I would hope/expect that to be Toby Hart, who is local.

Wheeler-Greenall would be very unlucky. Dunedin club player of the year last season, and a contracted player with pretty much his exact same skillset (Finnie) retires.

Edit ^^ Actually with 5 seam bowlers (McKay, Bacon, Duffy, Hazeldine, Muller) plus a seam bowling allrounder (Gibson) maybe it will be a second spinner that they will want to contract? to replace Rippon.

Predictable ND list, the squad is just continuing to get older and older. Someone has to make some tough calls at some point.

How did Rhys Mariu down at Canterbury not pickup a contract? Surely every single province his offering him there last spot.

I wouldn't be surprised if they take a punt on Zac Cumming if they are going after a second spinner.

Seems bizarre, surely he's a better bet initially than Matt Boyle. Canty have named specialist 4 batsmen in their squad (Bowes, Carter, McClure and Boyle), none of whom have really pulled up trees
