Michael Clarke - Australia's next Skipper??

Provided he consolidates his spot in the side and keeps churning out the runs I cant see any realistic threat to Clarke as next skipper.

As has already been mentioned he's captained every age-group side he's been involved in and has won plaudits for his leadership there, plus being the only man 100% assured of a test place atm who is under 30.

Only real scenario's I can see in which someone else gets it are -
- He's in and out of the side over the next few years.
- Ponting plays on till he's 37/38 by which time Clarke will be 31/32 and a better and younger option may have presented itself.
- Cameron White somehow establishes himself in the test side by the time Ponting retires and is preferred, only other player in the country in the right sort of age bracket who fits the captaincy bill atm.

Clarke will be named vice-captain of the Australian team on a full-time basis once Gilchrist retires unless he has a horror summer imo, in fact wouldnt suprise me hugely if he were named vc even before Gilchrist departs.

Would White really be good enough to be selected as a batsman alone? He really seems to have lost his leggies badly just now so I don't think they'd be much (if any) of a factor in his selection.

Not atm imo, though the season he is having for Somerset would suggest otherwise..
Allthough I think he could be..
As for his bowling I dont think it will ever be anything special..

I believe down the track he will be good enough to be selected as a specialist batsman, with his leggies a handy 5th or 6th bowler option.

Remember White only just turned 24 last week, he is more than 2 years younger than Michael Clarke which people often neglect because they've both been about in domestic cricket for the same amount of time. And if you look around at the other batsman aged 25 or under in Australia atm, the only other really in the same league as White is Mark Cosgrove, none of the others are really fit to lace his boots.
Plus remember for his first couple of seasons White played almost exclusively as a bowler, batting at number 8 or 9 in FC cricket and averaging 20 at best.
Since about 2003/04 his batting has really taken off and if he continues to develope I expect him to be one of the mainstays of the ODI side by his 30th birthday and would be suprised if he didnt play test cricket aswell.

Yeah it seems like he has been around forever, mind you making your FC debut at 17 IIRC) does do that to people.

If Brett Lee ever captains Australia I will have to sue Brett Lee for injuries sustained whilst laughing so hard that he became appointed.

I'm sure you could find worse, he's very enthusiastic, he'd give it everything he's got, the sort of player who would run through brick walls for the team and you get the impression he does know a bit about the game particularly analysing opposition batsman.

In 2000/01 Inside egde ran an article about who would replace Steve Waugh as Aussie captain, and if I remember right the candidates they named were Gilchrist, Simon Katich, Warne, Lee and Andrew Symonds ( ).
But yeah he has never captained at any level that I'm aware of and its never going to happen

Yeah, Clarke is it unless he:
a) massively loses form,
b) gets seriously injured,
c) gets punched out at the Beefsteak and Bourbon at the Cross while giving pitch condition reports to a bookie, and SMS some bint in England, after swearing at some kids and throwing a cricket bat through a dressing room door.

But although I rate Watson as a ODI player, and as a Test prospect, if he's the next captain of Australia, I'm emigrating out of here.

This would make him a prime candidate given the current Captain's not so vainglorious past.

And as for Watson even being considered that's a joke of course

I'd say that its a joke at this stage while he has IMO established himself as a good ODI player, his very small test career has been far from impressive and he's not even currently in the team, let alone an established test player. I'm not saying that I don't think he could become a quality test player, but at the moment that question is still such a big "if" that it seems bizarre to be putting him forward as a realistic option as the next captain of the team. Besides proving he's good enough, he'd also need to prove he can play more than a couple of months at a time without getting injured, and also need to learn to handle himself in the media better than he sometimes has. I hope he does all of those things, but until he does, he remains a player on the fringe of the team, not a key component of the future in my eyes.

Im pretty confident Waton will have established himself in the test side by the time Ponting goes, but I dont for a second think of him as captaincy-material, unless we really are facing a lack of options.
I know he's captained at underage level and he's in the right age bracket, but in terms of personality he just does not strike me as a leader or one who has the ticker to captain Australia.
