Mark Butcher vs Johnny Bairstow

Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
Just to add to the Collingwood love, I used to show his catches against Australia in 2005 to people in cricket v baseball arguments. I did temporarily lose some love for him when he made a 3-0 prediction against Pakistan post-Ashes, but overall he was one of my favs Eng players from that era.
I don't think he did actually predict a 3-0 win. I think he said they were aiming to win all three tests. I might be wrong of course, but I vaguely remember thinking that even aiming for 3-0 sounded slightly disrespectful, even if it was a badly worded way of saying that they aimed to win any game that they played.

You're likely correct. I think the England fans at PC.net being vociferous in their now apparently #1 status post-Ashes were a big part of the reason that 3-0 statement rubbed me the wrong way. In the months prior Pidge had made a similar statement about aiming for 5-0 in the Ashes which everyone seemed to have a good whinge about, so Colly's statement seemed ****y as hell.

Well, Butcher despite a mediocre overall did average 38.3 specifically at 3 in 45 matches (78 innings) which seals the deal for me despite Bairstow's prowess at 6 and 7. I don't like comparing different positions in order, so it's ideal Butcher's overall is simply knocked down by his average as an opener as his record at 3 is actually pretty good if we aren't using high standards of course - for your average test player 38.3 average at 3 is certainly reasonable. You could have done a poll for this, bit late now tho
