Ashwin = Hadlee as a bat, is as straightforward as I can put it (obviously better bowler).

Kallis might be slightly better with the ball than they are as bats, but it's analogous.

292 wickets for kallis vs 3500 runs for Ashwin.

I would call it more than slightly.

Imagine a bowler reaching to 9K runs. Kallis is underrated in his secondary skill. Doing it for 150 wickets is way different than doing it for 300 test wickets.

Do agree with the conclusion, but comparing their tally isn't the right way to go.
I think it's a massive asset for any team to have a batsman who could pick near 300 test wickets. Runs/wickets tally in primary skills gets talked a lot but very few fans pay attention to tally of runs/wickets in secondary. As 5th bowler if you are getting to near 300 test wickets, it means you were contributing with secondary consistently in a long career. It's much better than some one doing it for 20% of career and improving stats.

Now if anyone thinks that Ahswin batting quality was better than Kallis bowling then longevity does not matter to me. But I don't think that's the case here.

Kallis had insane longevity for the wicket tally. Doesn't mean he was that much of a match changer with the ball.

His role was 5th bowler. Point of 5th bowler is to support and he did it consistently for his entire career otherwise he wouldn't have gotten to near 300 test wickets. 5th bowler is not expected to play the role of match changer. He is expected to bowl regularly and pick up wickets here and there,

Kallis bowled 20 overs on average for his entire career as 5th bowler. That's a huge contribution from his secondary skill. It was not just a case of him bowling 5 overs here and there or having a phase in his career where he focused on bowling exclusively. He just did it day after day for 160 odd tests. He has bowled more overs than Marshsall, IK , Steyn, Lillee etc.

Yes, his job was to make the old ball new and got the worst overs as ball was ageing.

It may not be in any order, but any list of 10 Test all-rounders that includes Jadeja or Shakib yet excludes Sobers is sacrilegious.
