Not knowing how Lillee would have performed in WI, it is daft to conclude Lillee reduced viv's average by 20 odd runs./
Not knowing how Lillee would have performed in WI, it is daft to conclude Lillee couldn't have bowled just as well in West Indies (in fact he did during WSC, just not in your stats)

Confirms why it is daft to conclude Lillee had reduced Viv's average blah, blah, blah.

I'm constantly amazed how people in this sub-forum decide how a player would have played in a country that they never did, and then fight to the death that their made up beliefs are true.

Lillee never played Tests in West Windies (without a broken back) but apparently if he did bowl in West Indies he would have failed and Viv would have taken him apart. Where are these magic vision goggles that make you all so certain these made up assumptions should be treated as fact 😆

...meanwhile WSC, which was probably the highest level of cricket ever seen up to that time, never happened

Was wondering why he didn't mention the averages.

@Qlder that was disingenuous.
Not at all. I didn't have the series averages, just the 5 scorecards, and I couldn't be bothered adding up all the runs to get an average (wkts I could do in my head)

Viv Richards was in his purple patch of 1975-82 when he played against Lillee. In tests vs Australia with Lillee playing he averaged 48.73. In all other tests in same period without Lillee he averaged 69.09

I'll put that 20 run difference down to Lillee
You forgot about WSC.

This was the ultimate 70s and 80s macho match up. There wasn't a ground big enough to hold these two guys' egos when they played against each other. **** it was great to watch.

Overall Viv was a better cricketer imo, but Lillee matched up well with him. They were great contests.

People get caught up with the persona and stories, and fail to recognize how brilliant a batsman he really was. His WSC achievements were there for all to see, but there was a 89 that he scored vs Australia that Benaud called his best innings up to that point. It was brutal, but controlled and his driving and pulling were sublime.

He was also arguably the best fielder of his time, succeeding super cat, and a brilliant 3rd slip fielder.

Until that 89 series he was still a class bat. After that was the decline.

Major underrating of Viv on this board.

Viv the greater cricketer overall IMO. Though DKL I reckon is one of the very few who could claim to have come out at least even in their head-to-head encounters.
