I didn't say you aren't entitled to criticise him. I just don't think it makes him qualitatively inferior when given Kumble's struggles outside Asia for a long period of time, he would very likely have suffered the same fate.
And I said that it hardly matters since he didn't. Gibbs was benched for a good few years, Kumble wasn't. Not much else really, it's silly to say he would get benched in his shoes or any such totally erratic assumptions. Most importantly, those bad years reflects in Kumble's average far more than Gibbs' does (between 69-72, 29@56).

It's not an erratic assumption. It's context.

It's an interesting comp, I have Kumble ahead based on his strike rate/WPM.

Their stats and average/SR comparisons vs other spinners in their games. Spinners in Gibbs's games overall averaged and struck at 38.62/96.67, and in Kumble's games 36.17/76.52.

the strike rate of 96.67 is exactly why cricket in Gibbs’ era should be dismissed altogether

It's the text book definition of an erratic assumption, given it precisely didn't occur. And Kumble won't be dropped while then anyways, he didn't had a 4 year span averaging 50+ Home/Away combined.
Well does he have a 10-year-long period of averaging 24 with the ball, 25 at home and 23 away?

What does it have to Kumble being dropped? And don't you think it's dishonest to give Gibbs credit for home conditions over Kumble's, but not doing the same for Kumble away??
What does that have to do with Kumble being dropped?
I don't get why Gibbs being dropped in 1971/72 is such a big point, he was dropped for two serieses against India and New Zealand and then was back, why is it even the centrepoint of a discussion?

also, away/neutral

Kumble: 35.85
other Spinners: 42.75

Gibbs: 28.69
Other Spinners: 46.05

It's not a big point. I (and pretty sure Luffy too) rate Gibbs and Kumble around equals.

Kumble was averaging 40 away from home before the 2003-04 BGT. It's some call to suggest he would outperform Gibbs on pitches that Sobers claimed "nearly killed Caribbean cricket" and encouraged Lloyd to abandon spin.

Regardless, Gibbs is better. Higher peak, better away record, carved a career on the roads West Indies had in name of wickets at the time.
