Both of these players seem to up in the reckoning in All Time ODI XIs, rightly or wrongly.

Who do you think is the better player?

Symonds - eventually - became a damn good top-order batsman, but his bowling has never been beyond part-time level.

Klusener is almost certainly the best lower-order hitter in modern ODI history, and could bowl damn well - though he didn't do so as often as he should have, especially later in his career.

I agree with those above. I would say Jayasuriya is more of an all-rounder than Symonds.

So assuming they're contending for an all-rounder position middle-late order batsman, I'd go with Klusener.

Klusener for the reasons cited above although Symonds could still go on to do much, much more in the future. Also agree that it would be a better question to compare Jayasuria and Klusener ATM.

Klusener by a mile, he was as explosive as Symonds, and much better than him as a bowler. A Klusener Vs Jayasurya comparison will be interesting.

Klusener for bowling when he was quick, Symonds for batting (as someone has said, when Klusener batted higher and had to build an innings, he didn't do as well as when he could just throw the bat for 15-20 overs).

Symonds the overall more valuable player for mine but geez, you'd have them both if you could.

Reckon Symonds just pips him but that's probably influenced by the fact I haven't seen Zulu for years and the last time I did he was averaging about 8 with the bat in the VB Series.

Symonds is a much more reliable batsman, however Klusener could get you out a tight spot with some lusty blows and was a much better bowler.

Symonds' fielding gets him over the line.

I'd have them both honestly.

I think Symonds probably has the better all-round game when you include his fielding. He's certainly a better ODI batsman, Kluesener the better lower order hitter and the better bowler by far.

If I had to select someone to be a 5th bowler and an all-rounder, it'd be Klusener. If I had to select someone to bat, fill in a few overs, field and just generally contribute, it'd be Symonds.

symonds @ 6
klusener @ 7
pollock @ 8

3 psuedo all rounders. moving from best bat to worst bat and worst bowl to best bowl.
3 pure bowlers 9-11 (2 fast men 1 spinner)

dhoni/gilchrist near top of order as the wiki and you have 4 pure bats.

As an all rounder Klusener > Jayasuriya. As a ODI cricketer Jayasuriya > Klusener (i.e. when fielding and captaicy also added)

Why Ponting before Symonds?

Speshly @ no.6.

I reckon if you put Ponting in there... you put him at 3 and shove out of the team.

Also, Klusener > Jayasuriya

^ Incomprable for mine. One's a lower order hitter and seam bowler, the other an opener and spinner.

Yeah, Jayasuriya's an inestimably better strokeplaying opener than Klusener and Klusener's an inestimably better lower-order hitter than Jayasuriya.

Obviously Klusener was a better bowler than Jayasuriya under most circumstances but Jayasuriya was certainly a better fielder. By South African standards, Klusener's fielding was no more than acceptable.
