James Sutherland Resigns

Sutherland stands down as Cricket Australia's chief executive | Cricbuzz.com

James Sutherland has decided to step down from his position as Cricket Australia's CEO, on Wednesday (June 6). He has given a 12-month notice to the organisation to plan for a successor.

The 52-year-old resigned from his position more than two months after the ball-tampering saga that rocked Australian cricket, resulting in the resignation of men's head coach Darren Lehmann, while Steven Smith (12 months), David Warner (12 months) and Cameron Bancroft (9 months) were banned for their roles in the incident.

...

"My overwhelming feeling today is a sense of gratitude," Sutherland said. "After nearly 20 years at Cricket Australia, the time is right. I feel very comfortable that this is the right time for me and a good time for the game," he added.

"In the last 12 months we have laid key foundation stones which have included a new strategy for Australian cricket, a new Memorandum of Understanding with the Australian Cricketers' Association that provides certainty for our male and female cricketers, and just recently, a new domestic broadcast rights deals that will see broader TV coverage and significant increases in revenue flowing into the game.

"As it has been over the last 20 years, it will be a privilege and honour to continue to serve the game over the remaining months that I am in office," he said.

Meanwhile, David Peever, CA's Chairman, thanked Sutherland for his services and confirmed that he will stay on for another term.

"Sutherland is without doubt the best sporting administrator in Australia and the best in world cricket," he said. "When he leaves the game he can most certainly say it's much stronger for him having been in it. The game has never been in a stronger position, and now the board will embark on a process to fill some very big shoes.

"This was completely James' decision ... the ball tampering situation has created upheaval but it has helped us understand the passion Australia has for cricket and we must tap into and respect that passion," he noted.

He won't be missed by Oz cricket fans but then again, what sports administrators are going to be admired by fans of the sport these days? As their job involves making the game more corporate and raising the revenue level it's almost as if the more successful they are in their main roles the more they'll alienate sports fans

Can't believe he's hanging around for virtually another 12 months before he actually leaves. Fmd.

I hope we're all saving the deserved joy and vulgarity for the Colin Graves thread whenever it happens.

Maybe without any pressure to perform now he'll finally make some decisions in the interest of cricket.

Cut from the same material as the ECB, that wanker. Good thing then for you Aussies (unless you get someone worse!).

I have far more faith in Sutherland than Kevin Roberts, who it seems is being groomed for the role. After the absolute hash he made of the CBA with the players, it wasn’t a great way to introduce yourself to the public.

17 years is a very long tenure - was still called the ACB when he took over - but I think some of his work with keeping cricket front and square in the public’s eye over summers is underrated.

According to media this morning, there's some suggestion Todd Greenberg may be in line for the job. Current odds suggest Roberts 3/1, Greenberg 8/1 and Burge odds-on favourite.

Mind you, they really let things slide between 2009 - 2012 when cricket had some sort of popularity crises with kids
