James Anderson vs Glenn McGrath - Similarities and differences

Anderson - Most test wickets ever for a pace bowler. The fourth most ever. He's an all-time great.

When deciding whether someone is an ATG things like longevity and evidence of extreme hard work to overcome your own limitations factor in quite heavily for me. When you factor these things in, and combine them with the fact that Anderson has more wickets than any other pace bowler ever then yes, he unquestionably is an ATG for me, the fact that he is perhaps not as objectively talented as those in that same bracket notwithstanding.

...And when deciding whether someone is an ATG and u have true atg like Steyn, Ambrose who were awesome home and away. Then u have greats like Walsh who though not in the same category as Steyn and co but at least Walsh wasnt completely useless overseas. Then u realize people just love to throw around this atg stuff willy-nilly. Afaic Anderson was to pace bowling what kumble is to spin; very good stats, tons of wickets, awesome at home but pretty pedestrian away. True atg like the Warnes, Muralis, Steyns etc were able to channel there greatness outside their home arena.

People love hating on guys that are not AS good away as they are at home. When that happens it's almost as though everything that they do, no matter how remarkable at home, is discounted. It's almost as though they believe that players like Anderson grows on trees and there'll be another one just around to replace him but that's never the case.

Yeah you're not wrong. Have a look at guys like Jayawardene and Samaraweera. SL would kill for them right now.

But all that said and done Anderson averages 30 against Australia even if you take out his early career crapness. That's not exactly ATG material by anyone's definition (and tbf not too many English posters are calling him that).

He's ATVG, it's that simple.

Except those who say Murali is an ATG.

Is it just Australia he has this blip with? Most players have a blip so that shouldn't mean much.

Does Anderson make the grade as All Time Home Great? Or is he still on the fringe?

And the last few posts just highlights the problem with the idiotic terminology of ATVG and so on.

James Anderson, Anil Kumble, Courtney Walsh are all great bowlers. They are not VG or ATVG. They are Greats of the game plain and simple.
They're a tier below the All Time Greats like McGrath, Wasim and Warne, but the term 'Great' should still be used to describe them.

It sounds idiotic at first, till the wicked cleverness of the term is explained: ATVG == All Time Very Good == Not Very Good All the Time

He is also mediocre vs RSA. Then overall, he's excellent at home to most teams but away it starts to go down hill. + 33 away vs most teams, only doing well in the Wi vs a minnowesque Wi and in the UAE vs Pakistan (I will give him credit for this). But relative to real atg fast bowlers, that's way too many blips.
