James Anderson vs Glenn McGrath - Similarities and differences

Actually, in terms of bowling style, Hilfenhaus is one of the few Australian bowlers I've seen who operated as a swing specialist (after Fleming and Reiffel, they've produced a few express quicks like Lee and Tait or short of a length specialists like Hazlewood, Siddle, Bollinger and Johnson).

Obviously, not close to Anderson quality-wise. Bowled quite well when they toured India in 2010.

I like how Stephen floats the idea that Andersen wouldn't have had a test career if he was Australian. How does Stephen think Warne's career would have panned out if he was Indian? Did we have a discussion on this in recent past?
Pretty damned well. That's a disingenuous comparison.

This has been quite an exhibition of nationalist drivel.

Man, this baseless speculative nonsense really annoys me. Bowler X wouldn't be as good today therefore he's useless. Bowler Y sucks because he wouldn't have played a second test for my team based on this illogical hypothetical scenario. Who gives a ****. It contributes nothing to the discussion and certainly doesn't help us evaluate a player. You all deserve Borges's ATVG trolling.

CW is really opposite land in the cricketing social media world. Indians and Pakistanis are the voice of reason while the Australians and English engage in nationalistic dick waving contests.

The only difference being the English are not that arsed. I personally find it more comical the way he sends the Aussies mad. Any (perceived) slight to national honour tends to provoke the Australian. The English are more, ''yes Jimmy is good but it is not as if he plays footy or anything''.

Only reason I pointed this out was because Stephen was actually involved in a speculation on how Warne would have fared if he was Indian. And of course he was unwilling to consider that it could even hypothetically have gone differently. I was in effect expressing my exasperation with this kind of discussion where depending on whether the player in question is your hero you make up arguments that he would have excelled/failed for another country.

That's funny because based on this thread it seems like the opposite to me. It's not the Aussies getting upset and swearing etc. Maybe it's a matter of perspective.

Yeah it's the English who are getting upset at Jimmy being compared to lesser Australian bowlers. The most amusing thing is that they were the ones who brought it up.

Nah that's pretty simplistic.

It's actually interesting to some people to discuss why great players did or didn't succeed in all conditions or against some opponents. It actually does help to evaluate a player if you consider how he may have fared if he were from another country.

I mean, WE KNOW (based on his record), that McGrath would have been the greatest quick ever no matter where he'd been born.

Likewise, we can speculate that had Alderman been born in England, he might have been remembered as an ATG, the same way people are trying to claim Anderson as one now.

FWIW it's no slight on a player to be far more adept in home conditions. That makes perfect sense. It's just that the cream, the ATGs, adapt to ALL conditions. Like McGrath averaging sub 20 with a SR of 39 in England, opposed to Anderson averaging 35 at a SR of 71 in Australia. The elite players have elite records in (almost) all conditions.

I can only speak for myself but I'm being facetious. If your penis size rests on your chap being deemed better than Jimmy then continue with your stat comparisons - please do. Heck, I'm not even Lancastrian.

I am not upset, only one I'd get upset about is if anyone tried saying Brett Lee was better.

If only Jaydev Unadkat was Australian, he too would have been better than Jimmy Anderson.
