Is there a team that can beat this Asian ODI XI?

There again, you get Anwar and Afridi mentioned I think for the first time 40 odd posts in. Both terrific players.

Some deadset great names which can be tossed about here.

Some really prolific guys not rating a mention. Mark Waugh another who had a great ODI career but will struggle to make the non-SC side here.

The thing about ODI ratings, ATG discussions and AT XI selections is the fact that more than any other format of the game, this one requires such immense contextualization given how different the rules and conditions have been across different eras. I myself have seen 4 now and there must have at least 2 more before 1990 or so.

My Asian ODI XI would be -

Sachin
Saeed Anwar
Virat
Zaheer / Miandad
Shakib
MSD (c)
Afridi / Razzaq
Kapil
Wasim
Waqar
Murali

Afridi is my wildcard pick here (I like Burgey's suggestion of Razzaq too) because I think he just adds more to the side. Maybe Razzaq in SENA conditions and Afridi elsewhere. I think the other 10 are good enough to warrant a wildcard pick and if it were to be a hypothetical team, I think the balance is far better this way. Also, Saeed Anwar is bloody underrated. It was a close call but once I knew Shakib was the #5, I didn't think we will need the SLA option of Sanath and I feel Saeed is more likely to perform across all conditions.

The RoW XI -

Watson
Lara
Viv
Ponting
AB (wk) / Buttler (wk)
Bevan
Hussey
Warne
Starc
Bond
Garner

Bevan and Viv being the 2nd and 3rd spinners is not promising but otherwise its as well rounded a side as I could pick. The variations and variety of the bowling attacks of both sides is a mouth watering prospect.
I forgot about Anwar. He was class. I think once you have Shakib and Murali you might as well pick another bat or pacer.

Surprised you dropped Gilchrist.

Whatever it takes!!!

I think it is common knowledge by now on CW that I think his ODI prowess is rather overrated. Also, with ODIs going the way they have, you have so many more options at the top of the order than the middle and lower middle orders.

Gilchrist would be one of the first picked for me, but ABdV and Buttler are both great replacements so can't really say that it weakens the team by that much

Not quite sure I understand the DeSilva love here. A good ODI player but these are several better selections than him for the middle order. I think his 96 heroics colors opinions of him too much.

Waugh is a bit of an AR in ODIs too though. Its not as far as off as you may think although I essentially agree with your ranking order.

I dunno, I find watson over rated in LOs here tbh (the allrounder not the White Flight poster on here, who no one rates). But can see why people rate him highly

I am surprised by his numbers because when he was playing I never rated him that highly.

Yeah same tbh. I mean he was such a maligned player here that I’m not upset if he’s now regarded more highly cos he copped a lot of **** when he was playing and was often a scapegoat. Had a very good run as a test opener too tbf when he stepped into that. At a time when our batting was dire too

Watson was basically Hayden with the bat (and rig) + a genuine bowling threat.

Gets marked down for being immensely beta. Probably cried on a daily basis

WCs should count for a lot. But even apart from that, he was one of the early batsmen who started batting very fast in ODIs. SR of 81 in the era he played in is extremely impressive.

You don't need this much bowling. Inzi should definitely make one of the two XIs imo.

Lloyd was a great ODI player and captain. Deserves a mention here.

Going Waugh or Watson over Lara and Haynes mainly due to need for the 6th bowler.

Bowling a bit weak.

Ideally you need four worldclass bowlers plus 1/2 allrounders.

Which I why for me I preferred the Wasim/Waqar/Imran/Kapil/Murali combos. All class bowlers plus a deep tail.
