Is MS Dhoni an ATG OdI batsmen?

Dhoni vs Gilchrist in an AT ODI XI is about the other players. Generally speaking you go Dhoni+Jayasuria or Gilchrist+Bevan. The rest of the order is:

Tendulkar
Jayasuria/Gilchrist
Ponting
Viv
Middle order bat of choice
Dhoni/Bevan
All rounder of choice
Warne
Akram
McGrath
Garner

Given the fast bowling Warne fits better than Murali and the three quicks pick themselves. 5 and 7 are flex spots that can go to anyone.
Not sure what the logic is for picking Warne over Murali.

You're better batting Bevan at 6 than Dhoni. Bevan was a better batsman and a better finisher than Dhoni. The only reason you'd consider Dhoni is if he's keeping.

It's like picking Gilchrist or Jayasuria as opener - there are other batsmen who are the same or slightly ahead but Jaya gives you a great bowling option and Gilchrist gives you an excellent keeper (who was better behind the pegs than Dhoni).
No reason to think Bevan was a better batsman than Dhoni in ODIs.

Except their accomplishments of course.

Dhoni did what he did in a time where there were several batsmen doing what he was doing. He only did it in asia and even though he was quite good at doing what he did he wasn't unique in doing so.

Bevan was a freak. In a time where 70 was a good strike rate and 30 a good average he came along and blew everyone away. People hold his strike rate against him without realising that he batted at 80 in the first innings (which is a perfectly acceptable strike rate for a #4 batsman even today) and averaged 60. He won the game for Australia on so many occasions that it was easy to lose count. When he was not out, we won. He succeeded everywhere and against some of the finest bowlers the game has ever seen - Ambrose, Walsh, Bishop, Donald, Pollock, Akram, Waqar and a bunch of others.

He was a giant in the 90s and he did what he did when nobody else was doing it, better than anyone had done it before and better than anyone has done it since.

With Murali, McGrath and Garner you have 3 genuine 11s. Warne over Murali gives you two decent tail enders with the bat.
Warne averages 13 @ 72 with the bat in ODIs. This is a weak argument to pick him in an atg ODI xi.

Wrong.

He only did it in asia and even though he was quite good at doing what he did he wasn't unique in doing so.
Only in Asia? No. Several? No. So, wrong again.

Bevan was a freak. In a time where 70 was a good strike rate and 30 a good average he came along and blew everyone away.
Again, bullshit. Here are some ODI stats from the day he debuted to the day he retired:

Batting records | One-Day Internationals | Cricinfo Statsguru | ESPN Cricinfo

Qualifications used were simple. Batting average of at least 35 after playing 50 matches. 25 players scored faster than him in the era. In fact, Klusener average 42 and struck at 90, which makes him just as good as Bevan imo. These are nothing but memories deceiving us after a few years have passed.

People hold his strike rate against him without realising that he batted at 80 in the first innings (which is a perfectly acceptable strike rate for a #4 batsman even today)
Yeah, if your name is Joe Root. Game has moved on.

And Dhoni didn't? He won a WC final where the best ever ODI spinner was defending a decent target.

He was a giant in the 90s and he did what he did when nobody else was doing it, better than anyone had done it before and better than anyone has done it since.
Nah, Klusener was as good a finisher as he was. He made up for the difference between their averages with his superior strike rate.

That was Donald and no, Bevan choked in the 96 WC final, which makes him an overrated hack just like Abdv.
Nah. Klusener panicked and ran like a madman even though there were 2 more balls left. No way would Dhoni or Bevan have **** the bed like that.
