Whatever it takes!!!
How, based on what evidence? The guy can't rotate strike to save his life, even his spin bashing abilities have taken a dip over the past season. And nowhere near the consistency of Iyer either.
Coz of the simple fact that Shreyas was worse batting at those numbers based on how it went in 2024 for him.

Iyer can easily challenge Tilak at 3/4. It's not like we should not have backups for Tilak and SKY. And who decided Iyer can't bat at #5? He has the big hitting game.
I am not denying that he can be the backup for 3/4. But I am assuming they could not fit him in the first 15 and probably did not want him to be a reserve, while being a regular and senior member of the ODI squad. In any case, I wont mind him being in the 15 or the backups, but I definitely wont be starting with him.

HB fantasizes about 9 bowling options and nominal batting till #10. He is not going to back Iyer over Dube or Shardul.
You guys do realize I have been one of the biggest Shreyas advocates and supporters here? :)

But you do want #5 to be able to bowl. Don't deny it.
Look honestly, I think all LO cricket and esp T20 is moving in that direction of multi skilled players. So yeah, that would be my preference. But then again, I would have Rinku batting at 5 for us and he does not bowl much. I just think batting 5/6 is a different skill in T20s to batting 3/4.

I think every batter needs to be a big hitter these days. That's it.

Also if your #5 has to bowl you basically want 7 bowling options? Or more?

Yes 7 bowling options wll a norm as bowlers start to become specialists in certain phases of the game too.

7 bowlers to bowl just 20 overs is bonkers. Add a WK and you have just 3 spots left to fill purely for batting ability.

But you know my opinion on this.
I am not saying you need to use all 7. But I think sides will want to go in with that many options. There is that famous MSD quote from 2018 IPL, right?

So you will drop an unquestionably better batsman with a lesser one to give yourself a 7th bowling option? Yes?

Feeling sad for Iyer. He's in his prime and is gun against spin. With the next T20 WC in India too, he really should have been a lock. Meanwhile, Tilak Verma - I have seen him struggle on slower pitches. He's more suited overseas (back to back tons in SA and then not doing much on slower decks in India). There's still time though; India has 21 T20Is left before the T20 WC so anyone who's not upto it will get 'found out' in this period.

No, I just wont pick a top order batter to bat 5 just because, when a perfectly capable middle order batter is around. If they can bowl, that is a bonus.

Apprehently bcci wants gill to be test and t20i captain and iyer as odi captain. Imo would prefer iyer to be white ball captain and gill for red ball with separate coaching set up for tests

I wont mind Gill being white ball vice captain and Shreyas being white ball captain but after this cycle. I guess their point is Shreyas still does not make the side, at least according to them, so does not get the gig.

FWIW, I think Shreyas would be our #4 for the next cycle and I think SKY would most likely hang up his boots for T20Is after the WC next year.

Apart from the main squad of 15, reckon we could roll out 4 (or maybe even 5 more teams) that could compete for the trophy.
