Guys help me in this argument

honestbharani

Whatever it takes!!!
It's a generic term used for the language of which the two formal registers are Hindi and Urdu. Old fashioned term since partition, and somewhat un-PC now, but in an informal, latin-transliterated context it's hardy appropriate to alight on one or the other.

Same situation as Serbo-Croatian where the same language has two formal registers with different writing systems and the resultant divisions are due to that and religion rather than language.
Fair enough. It seemed like you referred to India as Hindustan which has various connotations and is usually not used in a good faith manner. If you meant the language, its fine.

I'd have thought it was clear from the context (and spelling). I have no desire to get involved in the religious-divided arguments over that part of the world.

Did he even mention India?
I've been following that argument on-and-off for months and it's ****ing insane. They couldn't see the truth in front of them if it punched them in the nose. The hate for Rizwan is just so removed from reality (and yes, I'd take him over Finch right now in a heartbeat, though that's not actually saying much).

So many posters there have a tenuous, Migara-like connection to reality. Especially the self-styled authorities on fast bowling. I'd like to have it put with them, but don't know any Hindustani to have a proper argument with.

Read this as not knowing any Indian to have a proper argument with.

In the context of how the word is usually used, HIndustan means India and Hindustani means Indian.

Definitely a white guy who came up with this term.
Comes via Persian. A lot of European terms for things around the subcontinent are Persian (or Greek) influenced. Of course the Persians and Greeks don't call themselves that either.

I meant don't know any of the language. I see now that it is ambiguous, I used 'know' as it's broader than 'speak' or 'write', and not knowing either script I couldn't write anyway.

I've literally never seen anyone refer to the desi languages as Hindustani before this thread

My first encounter with term "Hindustani" was about 15 years ago on internet (Wikipedia). In India and Pakistan, no one uses Hindustani to refer to the language iirc. Anyway, it's a term I have known for many years now
