It's been a while since so mediocre a cricketer has been picked to lead a top tier test side. Tim Paine springs to mind, but at least he could competently execute his primary skill. Gill cannot. Even if he translates into someone who improves their average as captain, he would probably get to averaging, what? 35?

Well there is a recent example of a fella averaging under 35 who has got his runs at 58 since becoming captain and tomorrow leads his team out in the WTC Final.....
Sometimes these appointments can bring out the best in players.

It's just the pathetic state of Indian test cricket right now.
Bumrah won't play all tests. Rishabh Pant confidence wise is at his worst ever and the selectors don't look at him as a long term captaincy prospect. And the others are too old to take captaincy now.
They are backing him to come good I guess. He can be a very good test batter but at this point he needs to improve on a lot of aspects.
At this point I don't mind if they lose, but they just have to get their batting sorted out.
In test cricket, Shubman and KL are huge underperformers and its big time that they need to get their batting upgraded.
And it'll also be also be a test for Indian bowlers when Bumrah isn't available to save their asses.

Mate you don't know how bcci works. Bcci cares more about promoting individuals then winning games. It needs superstar sombody who is good looking has massive pr and has elite girl friends. Gill is marketable but neither bumrah nor pant are. Only thing bcci give **** is about money. If gill doesn't get cash they would go to somebody else

Yeah, Jadeja and Pant rescuing our batting can't be the strategy for future. And we can't keep omitting genuine all surface wicket taker like Kuldeep just to shore up the lower order to help underperforming top order.
