Leach will be useless in Aus and Bashir has gone backwards fast. So they really need to blood someone else.Is Duckett injured? Why isnt he playing for Notts? This whole idea of resting players at the start of a season seems mad.
OTOH they let gus play for surrey and bowl 32 overs on the same flat pitch at hove that Pope made his 100.
Unless bash suddenly takes a hatful for glamorgan or whichever side hes playing for next week, i dont see how they can justify
picking him over Leach or some other hopeful.
Surely if Dan Worrall can qualify for England, so can Simon Harmer...Leach will be useless in Aus and Bashir has gone backwards fast. So they really need to blood someone else.
Not now he ended up playing for South Africa again in 2022 and 2023.Surely if Dan Worrall can qualify for England, so can Simon Harmer...
Leach is still our best spinner regardless of that. The only other option is to bat Dawson at seven and play four seamers.Leach will be useless in Aus and Bashir has gone backwards fast. So they really need to blood someone else.
Leach still isn't great, mind. Certainly "best of a bad bunch"Leach is still our best spinner regardless of that. The only other option is to bat Dawson at seven and play four seamers.
Probably shows more potential with the ball than the bat atm, but he's nowhere near international consideration. What do people make of Archie Vaughan? Haven’t seen much of him this season (aside from his filthy dismissal of D’Oliveira!), his figures don’t make for good reading but he’s still a baby and decks (especially outside of Ciderabad) aren’t likely to give much support to spinners
I feel bowling at Taunton (as long as they continue to produce spinning wickets) will help him, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that our best spinner of recent times has been from Somerset, for all of Bashir and Ahmed’s faults as spinners, they aren’t going to get those types of wickets away from Somerset (yes yes, I know the only reason Bashir is at Glamorgan is because he couldn’t get into the Somerset team). Tough gig developing spinners in English conditions…Probably shows more potential with the ball than the bat atm, but he's nowhere near international consideration.
Leach proved a better bowler by a distance. Then we entered the Baz/Key era. Bess also made a poor career choice leaving Somerset for Headingley.Dom Bess too. I'm still not quite sure how/why it went wrong for Bess. Performed pretty well with bat and ball, and his final year in Tests was his most productive (in Galle and Chennai). In a parallel universe, he's played 50 Tests and taken over 150 wickets.
Remember one of Bess' hauls in Sri Lanka (I think?) having more than a hint of fortune about it, I think he just leveled out as a sort of 'bits and pieces' player at Test level. Suspect Zimbabwe's team will be too thin to really challenge England, but they have 3-4 proven quality Test level players and are currently making a good fist of it out in Bangladesh, a place we really struggled in the last time we went and would be sure to struggle again in if we ever go back there. Not seen much of Ahmed Jr, I remember seeing him against Sri Lanka for the Lions (his FC debut, just before his stunning County Championship debut), but he must be a prodigious talent if he's getting games at 17Bess is such a talent, but not exactly mr consistent himself in the CC. Didnt england management fall out with him just as they have with dawson?
I'm guessing part of the reason why bash stays in the squad is that he does what hes told. But theres also Ahmed jnr who hasnt done much so far this season, but hes perf well enough last season to keep his place in the CC side at just 17.
And looking ahead to the Z test: those who think it will be an easy walk for england need to remember the ireland game in 2019 when england were
only saved embarrassment by leachs batting and woakes bowling.
Bess was generally terrible in the games I watched v India and SL but somehow returned reasonable figuresRemember one of Bess' hauls in Sri Lanka (I think?) having more than a hint of fortune about it, I think he just leveled out as a sort of 'bits and pieces' player at Test level. Yeah, all of his performances in Asia that year (2021) were largely very erratic and he rightly got pulled. I remember him bowling a range of long hops and full tosses and getting Kohli with a pearler in between that. There was obviously potential there but it was hard to see him be a reliable bowler unless he was going to bowl more consistently.Bess was generally terrible in the games I watched v India and SL but somehow returned reasonable figures
Looked like the nerves got to him and struggled to hit the pitch
England probably punted him as they felt that he couldn’t get away with it on most occasions
One of the tragics on social media produced a stat which showed that he bowled more full tosses in a spell than any test bowler since 2000Yeah, all of his performances in Asia that year (2021) were largely very erratic and he rightly got pulled.
