Emerging Players Tournament 2009

The Indian team finally wins. Now a few players can stake a claim for the national team, or at least India A, while some should figure regularly in their IPL starting lineups. Amit Mishra should find a way into the ODI team on the back of these performances. Rahane and Tyagi should be regular players for their IPL teams, while Kohli should go higher up for his team. Sangwan and Nayar, however, were disappointing, after the initial momentum in the tournament, and have finished with disappointing figures. In fact, all three all-rounders have failed in the tournament, which is a matter of concern, as those playing for India are not up to the mark. The good thing, however, is that this is a tournament victory, which means a lot more than individual statistics.

This was a great win for India A and we should look to get Amit Mishra into the ODI setup, asap. I have always thought he was an underrated OD bowler and his performance here merely enforces that.

This Indian team is not an A team or first reserve squad. Except for Mishra and Badrinath, none of these players would even make the second XI. Some of them, fresh out of U-19, still have some way to go before even making the reserve XI. The team needed some experience, so Badrinath and Mishra went this time. Likewise, New Zealand had Southee, Guptill and Fulton, while South Africa had Philander and Tshabalala.

Guptill wasn't originally in the squad. He was brought in because of injury. Southee is 20, and not in the Test, ODI or T20 squads atm. Fulton was captain.

No Philander and Tshabalala hasn't played for South Africa in over two years and is a million miles away from selection in any form.
