DoG's Test Innings and Bowling Performances. Updates thread.

Why Perera’s innings is slightly better?

1. Played for a weaker team

2. Played in away conditions

3. Played against a stronger bowling lineup

4. It was SL’s first win ever in SA

5. Perera’s innings was flawless and had no chances

6. Perera scored 50% of the runs. Stokes scored 37% of the runs

7. In Perera’s case, the second highest score was 48. In Stokes’s case, two others scored fifties.

I reckon Stokes’ today almost stems from the amount of one day cricket he’s played. When Broad got out he basically thought “**** it” for a few overs and backed himself to hit any bowler for 6. Then when it got closer he improvised a bit (ramp then switch hit) because that’s where the gaps were.

Just waiting for stephen to assess it as downhill skiing now.
Unlike his last hundred which had a healthy dose of luck involved, only a fool would argue that this hundred was anything other than very special.

The commonality in both cases is that he gritted it out until batting got a lot easier and then cashed in, instead of shrugging his shoulders and saying it's all too hard like most batsmen.

Hey DoG, how easy would it be to compile a list of the highest rated innings for each score ever made of 100 and above? Unlucky for Laras 153, but I think it would be an interesting read.

Can we also downgrade all innings that the batsmen would have traded for the blinder that Stokes played. Because it has been established that that's how we rate players' performances.

M8 this hundred had just as much, if not more, luck than the previous one. Doesn't mean it wasn't special though.

Not really. The luck in the previous one was genuine luck - getting dropped at the start of the innings, plays and misses and what not. The "luck" in this one was mis****s not going to hand and half chances not being taken late in the innings. In the first case a competent fielding team ends his account early. In the second case only a genuine act of pure awesome gets him.

You could say that he was lucky he didn't run out of partners but that's a different thing entirely. If he got out to the Lyon lbw it would have taken nothing away from his ridiculous innings.

Not as far up as I thought it would be. Here are some points that limited the points the innings gained.

1. He came in when England were a relatively comfortable 141/3 (all other context aside).
2. He "only" scored 37% of his team's runs. The maximum allowed for this system is 65%.
3. This was a good Australian side but not a particularly great one.
4. The batting conditions were obviously the easiest in the match.

I do them individually or I do all innings for each batsmen rated in the top 100 or near enough to the top 100. So, my database is limited.

I don't know if the innings are supposed to be ordered according to the numbers in the right-hand column, but if they are there are quite a few minor discrepancies.

Yes, and the discrepancies didn't exist in post #322

40 innings of the above 100 are from post-2000. 6 of the top 10 there are from little Sri Lankans. Sanga who doesn’t even feature in the 6 also has the most number of innings in the list (4) from this period. At first I wondered if the period is over represented in the list, then I realised that Sri Lankan batsman of the last two decades have just churned out more innings than any other team in a similar period which fattens the share of the post 2000 period fairly. Something in the water there.

There’s a number error between 30 and 32 I cbf correcting.
