Danish Kaneria

Pratters

Cricket, Lovely Cricket
What are people's thoughts on him? I have always rated him as a leg spinner but a lot of people have questioned him in the past. I have had debates arguing over whether he is good enough a fair few times with a few people on this forum.

I rate him. He's been solid in the CC for years now, and I would like to think I bowl a bit like him.

Solid in a relatively weak domestic competition agains players dreadful at plating spin? Who'd have thunk it.

Considering Shane Warne averaged less in tests than he did in the County Championship, I'd say the quality of players who can play spin is pretty good.

Needs to find himself a keeper.
This. I firmly believe if Akmal hadn't dropped as many as he did, he would be a much, much better bowler. Spin bowling is not just about skill, its about confidence, and having catches dropped regularly makes a big hit on your confidence.

Especially for a leggie. Must of your wickets are going to come from catches. Bowling to right handers, anyway.

he was out of form back in 07 and late 06. it felt like afridi could be a better option considering that he could bat as well. but he is coming back.. i would play him in Test only.. not ODI or any other formate of the game..he is the type of bowler who needs more time to settle down before he starts bowling good and taking wickets..So i don't think ODI and 20 twenty suits his bowling..

I reckon his bowling would get him into most test teams, but his fielding and batting would probably keep him out of some as well.

Hmmmmm. Never mind the other 19235482 spinners who do much better in CC than they do in tests.

Anyway, Kaneria's a pretty good bowler. Seems to attract more criticism than he really should.

 this.

He's a good bowler, nothing to get too excited by though.

He should have won more games for Pak. To me he never got to his peak in this entire time. Their seemed to be a lot more potential in him then what he has achieved. Yes, keeper has been the biggest obstacle in his career...

He's a decent Test bowler, but his inability to take it forward into ODIs is disappointing.

Kaneria is hugely overrated as a bowler.and its not his fault that he is overrated..After Saqlain...people in Pakistan including the management and his captains started to treat him as the trump card and match winner. Needless to say, he failed more often than not.
Why is he still in the reckoning? because Pakistan dont have a better spinner..

why do people think that he is unfairly criticized?
because he manages to take pretty inconsequential 7 wicket hauls conceding over 150 runs, somtimes close to 200 runs and people go "wow what a performance" without realizing that in the meantime, the opposition had managed over 500. He bowls close to 40 overs, even more, so obviously he will take the wickets the fall..but he makes no impact...a performance of impact is 7/88 not 7/188.

Australian commentators, trying to be diplomatic talk up his chances aswell but I am sure that being cricketers themselves, they know that Kaneria has never been a threat against any team that has 2 or 3 decent players of spin.
