CW Test Rankings - Updated Jan 2012

The Wheel is Forever
  1. Australia (1565.79)
  2. England (1013.76)
  3. India (986.03)
  4. South Africa (913.71)
  5. Pakistan (865.13)
  6. New Zealand (804.47)
  7. Sri Lanka (777.48)
  8. West Indies (435.25)
  9. Bangladesh (81.43)

Australia keep going to unreached heights, and SL worsened their record in Aus, causing a big drop (they previously had drawn one). Everyone else just went through a rating adjustment after this series.

Outside of their record against India, the Australians have won every single Test match they've played at home against every country, with the exception of one draw against South Africa. This is a completely ridiculous record. Discounting India, they are: 5-0, 3-0, 3-0, 3-0, 2-0, 2-0, 3-0.

I still think Sri Lanka would annihilate New Zealand.
Maybe, but NZ has done better in Test cricket than SL, and the rankings are a reflection of that. NZ drew a series in Sri Lanka, and at home beat the crap out of India, drew a series with RSA and SL and England.

Sorry for the couple days delay, but here are the rankings with NZ/SA series results included:

  1. Australia (1565.79)
  2. England (1012.12)
  3. India (985.35)
  4. South Africa (927.77)
  5. Pakistan (864.45)
  6. New Zealand (777.97)
  7. Sri Lanka (775.43)
  8. West Indies (434.74)
  9. Bangladesh (81.43)

Sri Lanka and New Zealand are now virtually tied.

Aussies have a huge influence on the rankings, as even drawing a match against Australia can catapult your ranking. Aussies are an outlier compared to everyone else (along with Bangladesh). So, I figured what it would look like if Aussies and Bangladesh were removed from the picture. Here is what the rankings would look like:

**************HYPOTHETICAL RANKINGS*************
  1. England (874.86)
  2. South Africa (869.09)
  3. Pakistan (827.21)
  4. India (794.08)
  5. Sri Lanka (745.39)
  6. New Zealand (725.05)
  7. West Indies (416.16)
************************************************************

These might actually be the 'real' rankings (except Aussies at the top) because there are some teams that are artificially higher or lower only because of their record against Australia. For example, India's 1-1 performance vs. Australia in Australia is so completely out of the ordinary compared to everyone else, that it gives them a huge boost in normal rating. With that said, Australia and Bangladesh do exist, so performances against them must be counted, but this is just an interesting exercise.

As you can see, except England remaining tops, everything else switches up.

I like these rankings better.... :D

India edge

England's lead is diminishing after the India/Pakistan series:

  1. Australia 1564.25
  2. England 1010.57
  3. India 1003.42
  4. South Africa 925.71
  5. Pakistan 839.59
  6. New Zealand 779.00
  7. Sri Lanka 775.09
  8. West Indies 433.78
  9. Bangladesh 81.43

A good showing (even if they lose) in SL will solidify their lead, but a whitewash by the Sri Lankans will see them drop. A 2/3 win from Sri Lanka will keep the rankings the same. Of course, India have a juggernaut next, so these rankings will surely change, one way or another, after that series.

Since the result of this series is exactly the same as the last series played in Sri Lanka against England, the rankings remain the same:

  1. Australia 1564.25
  2. England 1010.57
  3. India 1003.42
  4. South Africa 925.71
  5. Pakistan 839.59
  6. New Zealand 779.00
  7. Sri Lanka 775.09
  8. West Indies 433.78
  9. Bangladesh 81.43

  1. Australia - 1364
  2. England - 1120
  3. India - 1048
  4. South Africa - 984
  5. Sri Lanka - 886
  6. New Zealand - 846
  7. Pakistan - 731
  8. West Indies - 530
  9. Bangladesh - 93

Away

  1. Australia - 1764
  2. India - 958
  3. Pakistan - 947
  4. England - 900
  5. South Africa - 867
  6. New Zealand - 711
  7. Sri Lanka - 664
  8. West Indies - 337
  9. Bangladesh - 69

England have won something like one out of their last fourteen/fifteen away Tests, and their away ranking is steadily dropping.

Unutterably remarkable that India are second in away terms, England second (ahead of India and well ahead of Sri Lanka) in home ones!

Yup, but England are quite bad away these days. And England do defend their home turf quite well (except the recent series).

Pakistan pretty high up there in away rankings. How are we so much lower in home rankings? The one we lost against South Africa was the first one in at least three years.

Yeah, wasn't saying the rankings inaccurately reflected said traits, was laughing at the fact said traits exist, because they're so out-of-character!

Haha, yeah. Pakistan's home series read:
(Australia - lost 0-3) this was in UAE
Bangladesh - won 3-0
England - won 2-0
India - won 1-0
New Zealand - null-and-void? Won a single Test with the Second abandoned
South Africa - lost 0-1 (was won 1-0 until recently)
Sri Lanka - drew 1-1
West Indies - won 2-0
(Zimbabwe - surely null-and-void given the last series was nearly a decade ago?)

Well, the rest of the countries have a better home record more than Pakistan having a bad one. But I will double check their rating after I go back to work.

I went and created a historical chart from 2003-2008 of all teams in the middle (not including Australia, Bangladesh and West Indies) and another one of all teams.

Here is what they look like:

All Team Rankings
