Semi Finals - Tokyo (Japan) - Indoor Hard

Men's singles (Finals - Seeds - Section 1 - Section 2 - Section 3 - Section 4)
Men's doubles (Draw)
  • Tokyo will be treated to a repeat of the CW Open classic in the final of the Japan Open with CWLanders Sven Oxenstierna and Jefferson Drake set for a finals showdown. Whilst the epic in Nixonstown lasted four hours and seventeen minutes, Tokyo will have to make do with a best-of-three set affair between the bitter rivals. In the day's first semifinal, second seed Drake was forced to come from a set down to advance to his fifth ATP final after a three-set win over in-form Canadian Davis Kennedy. Much like his quarterfinal match, Drake started slowly, and this time he could not come back from a double break down as the classy Canadian looked to have the CWLander's measure in just over half an hour. But after dropping the first set, Drake regained his focus and shot out to a 4-1 lead of his own in the second set. Despite a break back from Kennedy, he was unable to claw his way back into the set as the world No. 12 looked to continue his push back inside the top ten by levelling the match at a set each. It was a decidedly tighter deciding set as both men struggled to hold service, but Drake managed to pull clear at the best possible time to win through 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. Regardless of the result of Sunday's final, Drake will move inside the top ten and, results permitting, could jump as high as world No. 9.
  • It was a much more dominant affair in the second semifinal as Sven Oxenstierna had no trouble in dispatching a tired world No. 50 Atthaphol Sae-ul in straight sets. After nearly three hours on court yesterday, the Thai No. 1 looked lethargic and sore as he was roundly thumped by the impressive Oxenstierna. After losing his first set of the week, The Ox has becoming increasingly more confident, and Sae-ul never threatened him here as he succumbed to a 0-6, 3-6 defeat.

  • Seeded players out:
    Davis Kennedy;
    Atthaphol Sae-ul.
  • There was no double delight for Drake as he and partner Martti Korpinen were easily beaten by CW Open champs Heath Davis & Jojo Mustard. The second seeds prepared for a tough affair, but looked the better duo in a crushing victory that took just fifty-five minutes. The third seeds played solid tennis, but were unable to produce the winners their opponents were as Davis and Mustard produced their most convincing performance of the week to pull off a 6-2, 6-3 win.
  • They will face top seeds Ross & Hayden Onwye in tomorrow's final after the Morrocans escaped with victory in a thoroughly entertaining showdown with Lee Inmin & Qingdong Tsai 7-6(1), 4-6, 13-11.

  • Seeded players out:
    Jefferson Drake &
    Martti Korpinen;
    Lee Inmin &
    Qingdong Tsai.
China Open
Semi Finals - Beijing (China) - Indoor Hard

Men's singles (Finals - Seeds - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's doubles (Draw)
  • Fourth seed Zhijun Sun has made his first ATP final since Marseilles after a tight win over top seed József Boros in front of a home crowd at the China Open. The former world No. 5 has only managed a record of 9-9 since his injury in Barcelona back in May, and finally showed why he is one of the most talented teenagers in the world with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win over the Hungarian No. 1.
  • In the second semifinal, Ukraine's Illya Altman could move back to the world No. 9 position after he took a tight win over Latvia's Ivars Emsis. Altman knew that he needed to return well to defeat the Latvian giant who had fired down 47 aces this week, and he did just enough to snare two breaks of serve to move on 7-5, 6-4.

  • Seeded players out:
    József Boros.
  • There was more Chinese success in the doubles draw as Gai Kai & Lu Xun smashed Aleksander Alitspritsin & Ivars Emsis in straight sets to book a place in a second final in as many weeks. In the best possible preparation for next week's Shangai Masters, Gai and Lu face makeshift pairing Antonio Bachunelli & Vladimir Gryzlov in the final after they prevailed 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 against Hau Li-an & Zhijun Sun.

  • Seeded players out: None.
Open Tarragona Costa Daurada
Semi Finals - Tarragona (Spain) - Clay

Men's singles (Finals - Seeds - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's doubles (Draw)
  • Scotland Rivers will look to avenge his loss in the final of the Challenger tournament in Vancouver by lifting the title in Tarragona in tomorrow's final against Jefferson Quezada. Rivers continued his prosperous run of form with a hard-fought 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win over second seed Aksu Emrem. The experienced Turk made it tough for Rivers, but didn't quite have the polish to see off the CWLander who secured his spot inside the world's Top 100. Quezada, meanwhile, had little trouble in his 6-4, 6-4 win over Marco Pellegrini.

  • Seeded players out:
    Aksu Emrem.
  • In the doubles final, top seeds Grigory Khugaev & Alexey Korskakov will face off against Israeli-Luxembourg pair Nico Hoffman & Benjamin Rabin. Whilst the Russians struggled for their victory, the third seeds were awesome as they smashed second seeds Ivo Nikolić & Vilmos Petričević 6-2, 6-1. Hoffman and Rabin have a games record of 36-13 this week.

  • Seeded players out:
    Ivo Nikolić &
    Vilmos Petričević

ATP Masters Series Shanghai draw released

Missing are Daneu, Stewart and Amato, so Smeltz sneaks a seeding and has a very winnable path until the third round where Hall awaits. Hancianu gets another tough draw with Wimbledon semifinalist Zoltán Varga first up (at least it isn't Cowan...), whilst Drake has his brother János. Drake gets a pretty soft run, really, with Boros probably one of the easier top eight seeds for him to get in the third.

Ox gets a potentially tricky second round clash against Kennedy, but not much else until the quarterfinals depending on which Brdar shows up. Wouldn't be surprised to see Davis knock him off. Brutal draw for Mustard with Cowan (who he has a good record against), Pascaul, Genov and Henson all in the same eighth - will be tough to get out of that packed three rounds.

Oxenstierna takes maiden title

Men's singles (Finals - Seeds - Section 1 - Section 2 - Section 3 - Section 4)
Men's doubles (Draw)

TOKYO, Japan - World No. 6 Sven Oxenstierna has ended his finals hoodoo to claim his first ATP title with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over nemisis Jefferson Drake at the Japan Open in Tokyo. After two previous final failures and a number of semi final appearances, Oxenstierna was calm and controlled as he finally made the breakthrough.

"I really just needed a win under my belt, and thankfully that happened today," the German-born CWLander said following his title win. "[Drake] has played really well in finals this year, so I knew I needed to get a good start and put the pressure on him."

At times criticised for his serve, Oxenstierna managed to fire down eight aces and win 86 per cent of his first serves to effectively take away any chance of a repeat of their five-set epic last month in Nixonstown. "He served real well and I didn't get the chance to break him back," Drake said of his opponent.

In the doubles final, CW Open champions Heath Davis and Jojo Mustard could not make it a CWLand double as they were beaten in straight sets by Moroccan stars Hayden and Ross Onwye. The Onwye Brothers claimed their third tour title in just over an hour 6-4, 6-3 in the perfect warmup for next week's Shanghai Masters.

"We were pretty embarrassed with our performance [0-6, 4-6] in Nixonstown, so to come back here and put in the performance we did made us feel a lot better," Ross Onwye said in the title presentation.

  • Second seed Illya Altman has claimed his second title of the season and moved back to the world No. 9 position by upsetting Chinese local Zhijun Sun's parade with a three set victory. Zhijun got the jump on his Ukrainian opponent by shooting out to a 5-1 lead, before the second seed stormed back to frustrate the local crowd and Zhijun alike to take the set in a tiebreaker. The teenager looked to have wrestled his way back into control with a sensational second set to level the match at one each, but soon fell away dramatically as Altman raced through the deciding set in 32 minutes with three service breaks to seal the title 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-1. Zhijun, meanwhile, was left to rue what might have been after giving up the double break in the first set.

  • Seeded players out:
    Zhijun Sun.
  • There was some respite for the local crowd, though, as fourth seeds Gai Kai & Lu Xun came from a set down to edge a tight match against Antonio Bachunelli & Vladimir Gryzlov. After taking the title last week in Bangkok, the Chinese pair started very slowly as the Italian-Russian duo dominated the opening set. But Gai and Lu played more aggressive tennis from then on and cut down on the errors to continue their rise up the rankings (equal No. 25) with a 2-6, 7-6(0), 10-8 win.

  • Seeded players out: None.

Final - Tarragona (Spain) - Clay

Men's singles (Finals - Seeds - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's doubles (Draw)
  • Third seeds Scotland Rivers has pulled off an unlikely come-from-behind victory to take the 55 points on offer in Tarragona, Spain. Opponent Jefferson Quezada looked the more comfortable on the Spanish red clay as he took the opening set 6-3, but Rivers improved his game considerably as the pair exchange a number of breaks of service. But it was Rivers' strength in tiebreakers that proved the difference as he took two in a row to claim his first Challenger title 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(5).

  • Seeded players out:
    Jefferson Quezada.
  • In the doubles final, Nico Hoffman & Benjamin Rabin completed a very successful week with a 6-1, 6-4 thrashing of top seeds Grigory Khugaev & Alexey Korskakov.

  • Seeded players out:
    Grigory Khugaev &
    Alexey Korskakov

Ortiz pulls plug on season, Champion out of Shanghai

Embattled Colombian Johan Ortiz will have surgery on a broken foot that will end a disappointing first season of ATP tennis. Seeded 21 at the Australian Open, Ortiz's season got off the to the worst possible start as he was beaten in straight sets by German Gunther Heug. Since then his ranking fell as low as No. 145 (19/7) and despite a late surge back to the world's No. 93 position, he will aim to move up the rankings in season II.

Meanwhile, Australian No. 1 David Champion has withdrawn from this week's Shanghai Masters with ankle soreness. His spot in the main draw goes to lucky loser Pascal Schmidt.
