If they'd whitewashed 2 series ago there rating will have gone down because of the Kiwi's rating falling?

A 5-0 defeat says the opposite, considering SA beat England...
The 5nil loss to Aust means absolutely nothing more than confirming australia are easily the best team in the world, and by miles !!!

The fact remains NZ has creamed both England and Africa and most other odi sides in the last 18 months.

The recent white-wash to this "great" Australian side playing with unparalled confidence suggests nothing as to where NZ stand against other sides in the world.

I'd suggest in a 5 match series with the way Aust are playing, they do any other side in the world at least 4-1 if not 5-0....

Well how can you say that on current form, NZ are better than South Africa? its just ridiculous, look at the results in the LATEST series.

What latest results ?? They bet England and Zim...NZ have won its last 4 or 5 games in a row against both those sides and Zim are a joke at the moment. NZ also whimped S.Africa
5-1 recently .....not comprehensive enough a margin for you??

They also won the natwest series against W.I and Eng (in Eng) just 9 months ago and didn't lose a game.

What recent results are you referring to ??

As I said before NZ vs Aust with Aussie so far ahead of the rest of the world tells nothing about where NZ stand against other ODI sides, simply because they have beaten all the other teams recently. People forget before Aust came for this series NZ easily won the first ODI agaisnt Sri lanka before the tsunami came (later that night) and stopped the series. Sure they have been smashed by Aust with a half fit team. But this is one hell of a great aussie side. What team would trouble them at the moment in a 5 match series??

No, your arguments are rediculous, england and sa havent played a series vs aus recently.
Last time we played England and sa, we thrashed them. Same with pakistan.

Going by your argument, if we use the same theory for tests and if england are getting thrashed in the ashes and at the same time nz is beating zimbabwe does that make NZ a better test side?

Well surprisingly India benefit from this series as they were previously whitewashed by Pakistan in India, so lets see what that does to the rankings:

Home
Australia 1362 (-10)
South Africa 1124 (-10)
Sri Lanka 1118 (-8)
England 1072 (-9)
New Zealand 941 (-10)
Pakistan 904
India 891 (+66)
West Indies 800 (-7)
Zimbabwe 248
Kenya 176
Bangladesh 114

Away
Australia 1611 (+10)
New Zealand 1077 (+6)
India 981
England 977 (+7)
South Africa 921 (+5)
Pakistan 847 (-63)
Sri Lanka 837
West Indies 688 (+7)
Kenya 374 (+4)
Zimbabwe 342 (+4)
Bangladesh 27

Total
Australia 1486
England 1024 (-2)
South Africa 1023 (-2)
New Zealand 1009 (-2)
Sri Lanka 977 (-4)
India 936 (+33)
Pakistan 876 (-31)
West Indies 744 (-1)
Zimbabwe 295 (+2)
Kenya 275 (+2)
Bangladesh 71

So India leapfrog Pakistan for 6th place in the rankings.

Next month sees West Indies play 5 ODIs against South Africa and 3 against Pakistan. Can West Indies make up some ground on the sides ahead of them?

India loses a series and as a reslt they improe a place in the rank over the team which defeated them because they didnt lose as badly? Time to restructure the way the rating system works then!

No offence intended here, but I think there are a few problems with this ranking system, as has been pointed out. I don't think having England number two in the world in ODIs is particularly accurate, and basing the rankings purely on the last result between the two sides is a poor way to go about it, because you run into situations like this.

I think the best way to do it is work out a predicted result based on the current rankings of the side, and give and take points based on the actual result as compared to the predicted one. eg: if Pakistan is ahead of India, the predicted result will be to Pakistan, so maybe 4-2 wouldn't improve their ranking much or even reduce it, but at least if it did that it would be justified since they didn't win by as much as they should. Under your system, they would have to win 6-0 to improve their rating. If Australia beats Zimbabwe 3-2 in a 5 match series, they would lose points since they should have won comfortably, but if any team beats another by a big margin over and over again their rating should keep improving to reflect the increasing gap between the sides, rather than staying static and then jumping back suddenly if they don't win by quite as much.

This website does the best test rankings on the web in my opinion, and they use a system like that. Incidentally they also go back to 1877 with it.
