Cricket stuff that doesn't deserve its own thread

I'll be honest, I don't see much pisstaking in other team sports subs and I don't see much here that would suggest it'll be different for cricket.
part of the craft of test cricket is the attritional aspect of it and making things work with the players you send on the park in the form that they're in and as it may ebb and flow over the course of the five days
prasidh getting to hobble off with a questionable toe injury and be replaced by akash deep as soon as he starts to cop tap gets rid of that element

It would be a disaster. We've already seen gaming of the system like India using Saha as a keeper and Pant to bat in both innings of the same game. With the exception of concussion, subs in cricket should never happen. Genuinely terrible idea

The fitness and mentality required to perform late into a day 4 or 5 of a Test match is massive. Imagine being able to sub in a fresh fast bowler or even a fresh batsman who hasn't had to field for 150+overs

Even if an injury late in a Test match is genuine, which is likely, it's still a big advantage for one side to get a fresh fast bowler

There is an easy solution here for bowling subs.

While the game is ongoing, the sub bowls the same overs as the bowler who currently has the maximum workload, including any celebration of a wicket or diving for the ball on the field. This can be done in the nets next to the ground and overseen by another umpire.

It would be an absolute disaster

Pitch turning square? Pace bowler is suddenly injured. Etc etc

And right now, its a huge advantage for the other side.
Yes but the difference is that's not an unfair advantage. An injury is the result of a lack of fitness, to varying extents. Even a freak accident like McGrath stepping on a ball in the warm up in 2005. It's unlucky but it's part of sport

The rule is for external injuries which is like the one Steve Smith suffered recently I think. It wouldn’t apply for say a Bumrah stress fracture or someone pulling their hammie which has more room for shenanigans.

A very rare occurrence tbh, maybe not worth bothering to fix.

Yep. And that should have substitutes allowed IMO.

And honestly, with the nature of cricket these days, its not that rare.

Why not make subs have to stand on the boundary all the time their team is on the field. Maybe including walking laps and jogging and sprinting through marked off areas.

I'd rather have a more even competition till the end rather than one team be ****ed over because of things beyond their control. I think this toughing it out stuff has grown old for a more modern era.

I think if that's your best case against it then it's a very weak argument in the end. I'm not sure why we have to worry about fringe cases more than having a more even competition between two teams, given how results orientated the game is now.

Isn't this great though? It feeds the drama, it introduces uncertainty, it increases the potential for an upset. The beauty of sport is that the better team shouldn't win every time.

Moreover, it encourages batsmen to work on their bowling which is always a fun thing to observe.

Not really? More often it's just tilts the contest decisively (outside of the recent introduction of concussion subs). That's not beautiful to me currently. The better team not winning every time isn't incompatible with the idea of proper subs, as seen in most team sports with substitutes. Fans shouldn't be hoping for injuries to the opposition players in order for the team they support to have a better chance of winning. As it stands, we're getting a lot of decisive results one way or the other because of a variety of factors including the state of the current pitches as well as teams having good/bad bowling attacks for those conditions.
