Cricket Australia contracts 05-06

Yeah it 5 spinners on the book and two are OD spinners (Hogg and White) or bowling all rounders. Hmm actually White more a straight all rounder these days isn't he. Cullen is third in line for a Test spot so it surprising he got a contract.
Whit is a batsman, and an average one at that. He's definitely not an allrounder.

Yeah maybe they should of given his contract to Nathan Hauritz :)
Why should either of them get a contract? Hauritz can't even get a game for his state, and Cullen has only been on the scene one season. You don't just give a guy a contract because he is the only decent off-spinner in the country.

No real surprises here, all of those who were dropped from contracts are unlikely to play for Australia again (with the possible exception of Williams if he stops injuring himself). Cullen was given a contract for two reasons: 1) The apparent need to have a young guy on contract when cricketers are playing well past their 35th birthdays, and 2) the apparent need to have a spinner under 30 when in the past spinners have not matured completely until well after that.

It is a fair enough squad and I think those cut have passed the time they are likely to play for Australia again. However I will say that Cullen is lucky to be promoted so early and would like to have seen him back his first year up with another solid one before he was awarded a contract.

James Hopes.... does anyone think he will make an impact at the top level, maybe as economical bowler in one day cricket but I don’t think he will play that many games particularly if Shane Watson stays fit.

I'm no fan of White, but he's clearly an all-rounder. He bowls in practically every game extensively and his side looks to him to take wickets as well as score runs. What else makes someone an all-rounder?

People will argue he's not a good bowler, which he clearly is, because he takes wickets consistantly.

It doesn't matter if he's any good or not. He is one of the significant batsmen in the side, and he is called on to bowl almost every match and his side relies on him to take wickets. Hence, he is an all-rounder. Whether he is a good one or not is a different issue.

Fair enough, I guess being a poor bowler & batter makes you an all-rounder.

I think Hopes might make more of an impact in ODIs and Watson becomes a test specialist.

Bichel certainly deserved a contract ahead of White but I guess he's being pensioned off like Bevan.

I think contracts are given to the guys that are most likely going to play a Test or ODI side ot tour, not nessary the best 25 players. That probably the main reason why White and Cullen are there and Haddin got a contract.

White - IMO he is behind Hogg for a ODI squad spot and therefore that why he got a contract
Cullen - 3rd in line for a Test spot, so if Warne or MacGill got injured then he will make a squad
Haddin - Australia are looking to reduce Gilchrist's workload so he will make more tours then before.

Guys like Beven, Bichel, Maher and Lehmann are probably one of the top 25 players, but are all unlikely to make any Test or ODI squad in the near future so don't get a contract.

completely agree. surely you've got to do more than have three really good matches to earn a CA contract these days??
Apparently not - Cameron White got one, didn't he :p Just kidding! On Dan Cullen though, I think it's fair enough that he got a contract. There's a dearth of 'offies' in Australia, and to pick up 43 wickets - which is more than 'three really good matches' - is outstanding, for an off-spinner in Australia.

Plenty of guys have been fast-tracked after a one good season - Michael Slater. Some have been fast-tracked after less than that - Glenn McGrath. What's more, these guys went straight into the First XI. Sure, there are no other off-spinners in Australia, but even if there were, 43 wickets speaks for itself. It's absolutely outstanding.

Wasn't a bad ton against the Bulls at the GABBA this season was it?

Funny, he seems to do fairly well against Queensland in his career...

vs QLD - 7 mts, 349 runs @ 38.79, HS: 119
Career - 37 mts, 1443 runs @ 27.75, HS: 119

+11.04

vs QLD - 7 mts, 20 wkts @ 30.40, BB: 4/27
Career - 37 mts, 88 wkts @ 35.25, BB: 6/66

+4.85

:)

Everyone is allowed one good innings. 119 out of 349 is pretty close to a third of his total runs against Qld. If you do the maths 349/38.79= rounded up 9 (out) innings, so if you then divide 230/8 it brings his average to 28.75, on par with his career statistics. After a few more games against Qld that average will be back down to around 30. Add to that a batting average of 27.75 & a bowling average of 35.25 is nothing to write home about.

Yes, they will sell papers because of their nightclub antics because they can't get a game. :p
