Chris retired from test cricket at the age of 27 and came to England (where his girlfriend - now wife - was based) and joined our local club side , Hornchurch, as our overseas pro. Chris, was a top, top guy, and obviously given his level of talent, and personality/character, did a fantastic job for us, on and off the field, and is fondly remembered here in Esssex. A real credit and ambassador for NZ, in every respect. I think a combination of his personal circumstances, lack of money, not always being first choice (although he ended on a high being top wicket taker in his last series, against England?) meant he changed career at a relatively early age. He was offered a contract with Middlesex in his last year with us, thus turning down to play first class cricket at Lords, but preferred to return to NZ with his girlfriend #lovestory?
