I guess but I'd rate some English players such as Boycott higher than Lara. Gower, Botham, Willis and Underwood especially are all pretty close.

We're talking batting here, not bowling. Boycott might have a case, but the rest don't.

what about:

Gavaskar
Sehwag
Dravid
Tendulkar
Azharuddin
Shastri
Kapil Dev
Kirmani
Kumble
Srinath
Bedi

Instead of picking three main spinners what about picking two & using Shastri 3rd spinner along with Dev/Srinath with the new ball.

Ever heard of Graham Gooch?
And Gooch is in Dravid-Tendy-Gavaskar-Viv-Lara-Chappell-Miandad class since when ?
Same with Crowe- good-very good but not in the abovementioned list and it isnt a close call either.

It may not be a bad idea to just pick 11 batsman and hope to bat out all five days, that way we never lose.
ha, yo mate, you sure you are an Indian fan, you give your side a lot of stick:laugh:

Dont like the idea at all and it makes no sense to me.
Lets see- India's batting lineup for this period is as good as anyone else's. But its bowling is not that hot. So what do we do ? We drop a great bowler and play 4 specialist bowlers and a stop-gap one.
Makes sense i suppose.

Hey, I love our batting. But unfortunatly bowlers win matches, and you need quality pace bowlers. And aside from Dev, and Srinath, we never really have any quality bowlers. And even Dev and Srinath...while good, would not make most other 20 year sides as specialist bowlers.

Maybe I go overboard sometimes, but I really do love the side and I want nothing more than India to win some series overboard so I get angry when our pacers consistently do bad and stop us from doing that.

But I am their biggest fan....thats why I critisize them so much ;).

Dont see why it doesn't make sense, especially in the sub-continent you would have Dev/Srinath with the new ball, Kumble/Chandra/Shastri spinning it, Shastri would help to strenghten the batting a lot plus a very good bowling option on the Indian tracks.

Some people are more objective than to never criticise one of their own nation, or one of the nation they've adopted...

If the match is played in the subcontinent, you most definately dont need Shastri in there and a 6 batsman + kapil format.
Azhar is as good as anybody in the subcontinent..and Shastri's spin is a pale shadow of atleats half a dozen spinners in Indian history,if not more...i just think 6 bat + Kapil + 3 bowlers is overly conservative.

I was not aware Hazare played tests after 1976, considering he'd be in his 60's by then.

VS Hazare - Different era altogether.
Putting Zaheer Khan there is a bit of a joke. Rather have a spinner than a crap fast bowler.

I didn't read the post 197? bit. And Zaheer Khan isn't that bad really. He took over 100 wickets in England this summer.
