Who would you select as the best ground fielder for each of the major teams in their history?
Definitely the answer for India as per title but OP says pre-2000 which is also a JadejaYet another thread…
Solkar may be the greatest short-leg fielder there has been in international cricket. He stood close then actually looked to move forward when the ball was delivered, terrorising batsmen unsure of their footwork against the Indian spinners. Other outstanding ones were Lock and Davidson.I loved Raina's fielding too. Pretty much in the top 3 best fielders ever for India. Have heard a lot about Eknath Solkar's fielding too but never seen. Not sure if there is footage.
Upul Chandana was the best ground fielder. Very quick to ball and a rocket arm. Mahanama more or less in side circle catcher than an out fielder, He did take some ridiculously difficult catches in outfield for his credit.Pre-2000. Chronological order. Specialist ground fielders, followed by great all-round fielders who excelled on the ground.
England: Vernon Royle, Jessop, Hobbs, Randall. All-round: AO Jones, Chapman.
Australia: Syd Gregory, Ransford, Pellew, O'Neill. All-round: Victor Richardson, Harvey.
South Africa: Owen-Smith, McGlew, Bland, Rhodes. All-round: Endean.
West Indies: All-round: Constantine, Lloyd, Viv Richards, Logie, Harper.
New Zealand: Vic Pollard. All-round: Donnelly
India: Ajay Jadeja
Pakistan: Asif Iqbal
Sri Lanka: Roshan Mahanama
Zimbabwe: Kevin Arnott
If we sneak in Ravi Jadeja to the Indian ATG ODI XI somehow, they will have one heck of a fielding line up.

Honestly forgot Kapil. Yeah add him in there. Makes it an even more awesome fielding side tbh.Agarkar over Kapil would have to be one of the strangest things I’ve seen on here
maxwell is a really good ground fielder bc he’s so loose
looseness is the key
Murali wasn't too shabby either in his younger days.Upul Chandana was the best ground fielder. Very quick to ball and a rocket arm. Mahanama more or less in side circle catcher than an out fielder, He did take some ridiculously difficult catches in outfield for his credit.
Even Brendon Mccullum was a great fielder when he didn't keep, isn't it?Elite NZ ground fielders (best of the best)
