govinda indian fan

International Debutant
Who is guy who you thought would have made great captain but never captained the team
Mine for india
Ravi shastri- our team would have much better in 80s and 90s if he was made captain ahead of duds like vengsakar and azhar
Gambhir- should have been captain in 2012
Ashwin- great cricketing brain. Would have been gun captain

People say Warne. Idek if he was captaining at FC level or how he was. Miller iirc also never captained Australia but was very successful domestically and is considered a miss.

I wonder what W/L records would look like based on the state the captain played for. Pretty good for Tasmania prolly.

Warne captained Hampshire from 2004-7 and I think was well regarded - got them promoted back to Division one in his first season and while they never won the championship, they were always near the top. They had a decent squad at the time though.

I know it is T20, but he was also highly regarded for captaining Rajasthan Royals (had to Google to check) to win the 1st IPL.

Obscure pick ... Roger Twose for NZ ODI captain early 2000s.

Twose was at ODI career batting peak in 1999 - 2000 (World Cup run to semi final in 1999 in England including match winning 80* vs Aust), 1890 runs @ 52 in those two years, had been successful domestic List A captain for Wellington. If NZ Cricket had split the captaincy between Fleming (tests) and Twose (ODIs) for the next few seasons it would have taken some load off from Fleming, and I suspect would have made the messy end of the Fleming / Astle / McMillan generation much tidier.

But in early 2000s split captaincy would have been unusual.

For NZ J F Reid would have been an astute Test skipper. Always struck me as a highly intelligent batsman, and a decent dude who could rally the lads.
